I have a Compaq 510 notebook

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 (2.0 GHz)
GPU: Integrated Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset
RAM: 2GB DDR2 (1 more 2GB slot available)
HDD: 250GB

Now, I know that my processor is 64 bit capable. But I have Windows XP SP3 32 bit installed. If I buy another 2GB DDR2 RAM, and install windows 7 64 bit, will I see a significant change in the performance?

Probably twice the performance? (32bit to 64bit transition??)

Solution
While it will work, you probably won't see much of a performance gain, the ram will make more of a difference then the OS honestly. And fresh OS installs are always quick, after you start installing applications (adding extensions, fonts, etc) It will begin to slow down like any OS.

However, WinXP is near end of life so installing Windows 7 is a good idea just for security reasons.

You will also be able to use a lot of software that is no longer available for WinXP or 32bit OS.

When you install Windows 7, disable the aero desktop theme. (use visual basic themes instead) This will improve desktop performance quite a bit since you are using integrated graphics.

Yeah. 32 bit only sees upto 3.25 GB. Rest is wasted. Now, is there any way I can upgrade the graphics in my laptop? I mean, does my laptop support that? And, do we have such things as laptop graphics card?

OK. So, can the RAM upgrade + 64 bit give a solution? I must tell you, it lags more than my desktop (intel p4 511, 1.5GB RAM, windows 7 32bit).

UPDATE: My processor is T5870 (i had a typo above)..
