Hello commies

I just got the sapphire r9 280x vapor x edition for a crazy 200 bucks on newegg on a sweet sale

And I'm in the market for a good cpu

I've decided to move away from AMD as they are a little outdated and it seems everyone is recommending me to go over to Intels side and I have the money so might as well go with Intel but I'm still on a budget SO

Should I get the core i3 4360 or the core i5 4460 for the r9 280x

I found the core i3 4360 for $148 on Amazon and core i5 4460 for $190 on newegg

Is it worth the $40 to go with the i5 over the core i3 via performance
Or should I just save the money and go with the i3

Thanks m80s

Again, you want something that will last you for a long time, even when 2018's AAA titles come out. DirectX 12 is better optimized for multi-core processors, so the i5's true quad-core architecture will be better than the i3's pseudo-quad core design. The jump in performance would be much more dramatic, in theory, than the 5-10 FPS difference between the i3 and i5 now.
Also, the R9 280X is a good card; you should make the most of it. You can upgrade in 3 years and still have virtually no CPU limitation if you get the i5.
worth it go for I5 will last a nice time

at least 4 years before u upgrade

unlocked CPU's usually last more 5 years or 6 have a look at the 2500K with a nice OC it is still kicking

anyways to answer your question defiantly go for the I5 u wont regret not upgrading the CPU until 4-5 years later right? ( or at least next console gen)

But is it really worth the 40 bucks? IDk man I'm skeptical, The i3 is on sale too

Yup, for sure worth $40, easy decision. You have chosen a motherboard already I assume?

Recent games are starting to use more threads, and the early previews of dx12 look to make it easier for programmers to utilise more threads. Hyperthreading on the i3s help mitigate the limitations with have only two cores, but it's no substitute for genuine quad cores of the i5s.

I would suggest (and this is pure speculation here), that in two-three years when a GPU upgrade makes sense, an i3 is going to be big limiting factor, meaning that you'd have to upgrade mono and CPU too. An i5 would still be going strong and allow you a GPU upgrade to have a modern capable system again... That is speculation I admit, but that's my suggestion.

well

it is an opinion thing but i really would like to have a true quad core in my PC instead of a dual+hyperthreading

the I5 is made for gaming

i7 made for rendering and gaming

Xeon is made coz it is a cheap I7 without the IGPU

and the I3 is made for browsing/mild gaming playing games on high settings etc...

for that card i wouldn't go with anything less than an I5

It is worth it to get an i5. Do you live near a Micro Center? They have an i5-4590 (3.3-3.7GHz) for $159. I highly recommend it.
