Hi,

Last time i build a system was 6 years ago so i'm a bit behind on stuffs so any comments and suggestions are welcome thank you

this will be my home workstation for the next few years to do a lot of photoshop, video editing, and a bit of gaming in the weekend

and this will be on dual displays 24 and 22 in rose red samsung

Id go for another board the EVGA Board seems so much better and the MSI so much Cheaper and about the same, if your gaming then i would recommend drop the 940 for the 920 overclock it and get a 4870 x2 or two 280gtx if you want to spend even less two 260gtx id go with the two 260gtx that would be about it

Get two 4870's, or a 4870x2 or 2xGTX280... Only one is making your build seem inadequate IMO..

Not for WoW but
the money you could save from downgrading to the i7 920 instead of the 940 you can afford a better GPU id go Nvidia for an i7 build as you can buy EVGA and get the upgrade to the 200gtx coming in the next months also changing the mobo you chose saves some more the best x58 its EVGA model or you could get the msi that's about the same as the RAMPAGE but a hell lot cheaper as the ASUS RAMPAGE layout doesn't allow a third gpu, a least not a big one...

i think what people are reacting to is the fact that your CPU and GPU choices are not very balanced for gaming

got it, yea i dont play much games i mostly using so image and video editing in photoshop and premiere. the system probably an overkill for what i do but i cant help it wanting the best and new stuffs

also, i do want to OC the i7 to around 3.6 thats why i want to get i7 940 instead of 920. does it make any diff at all between 920/940 or im just wasting $300?

I got the i7 920 and oc it to 3.8 on stock cooler, so ya, your wasting $300 on the 940.

Question, why buy all this high dollar swag when the only game you play will run fine on a $400 pc. 1000 w psu, $300 gpu, super expensive mobo, are you kidding me?

Id stay with the ASUS, yes its expensive, but you get what you pay for, but id hold off till about march, then there will be a much wider variety to choose from. You could also consider an INTEL solution for the mobo

+1 on the EVGA board. +1 on the 920 instead of the 940, even if you plan on going up to a 3.6ghz OC.

I also agree that you maybe want to do a gtx 260 (216 cores) or even step up to the the gtx280.

Overall, Yes this will be overkill for your wow experince, but if your doing photo and vidoe editing then you'll be set for a few years with this rig. Also will have enough power under the hood to play any current game at the highest settings as well.

i did some reading and the gtx 260 (216 cores) looks good and i heard ati cards have some issue with vista 64, something with not reading dvi. but ive been an ati fan boy for a long time so im a bit unsure about switching to a new band.

I'm more of a Nvidia fanboy just due to driver support. Nvidia is known for its ability of providing good working drivers, where as ati is more know for its price vs preformance value. Personaly I'd suggest taking a look into some benchmark scores out on the net for games that you currently play. Another thing to add is the gtx 260 will scale better than the 4870 (sli vs cf) in my opipion. Both these cards though are great choices. Cant really go wrong with either one.

I feel that the battle between nvidia and ati has flip-floped. I think Nvidia makes the better mid range cards with ATI Holding the top-end down with the 4870X2.

nVidia supply good cards to fit your needs, and the middle tech ones are not too shabby while ATI (from experience ) Seems to provide pricier pro cards... always trying to beat nVidia...

MMM... well id stay with the SSD ive owned a raptor and price wise you'd get a better deal for a regular 7200.11 640GB HDD, raptors are fast but they only affect some areas mostly load times are shortened you chose a rather good SSD the patriots series are some of the best SSD out there i own a 32GB version and couldn't be happier of course ive never used a raid o on it, so i wouldn't now if its worth it but id suggest you stay away from the raptor its overpriced of course if you really believe you need the extra performance go with the raptor...

i still have 2x SSD raid-0 for main OS and progs/games but ive read a lot of reviews and most said they for SSD reading is fast but still have 1-3 sec freezes durring heavy write. so i figured solve that issue by getting a v.raptor drive for that and get 1tb for storage later on down the line

mmm... well the only SSD Ive felt freezing in heavy writes was with my cheap OCZ Core butt the Patriot you chose its on a different level... in terms of read-write and personally, ive never felt it freezing butt still if you really want speed even if overpriced go for the raptor

Ok how is this I built the same system almost that you wanted, I got the i7 920, 6 gigs g.skill 1600 pi 3x2gig, rampage II extreme, xfx 4870 xxx, V8 cooler, coolermaster cosmos 1000, ultra x3 1000 psu, velociraptor 300, vista ultimate 64, samsung dvd, now my problem I know nothing about OCing I ask for help noone has any advice for me, the i7 seems to scare them I flashed bios on the xfxfixed the flashing works great now, but on the 3dmark06 get bad scores like 24 fps, total score of 10380 or something like that, don't know what I am doing in bios really tried turning somethings up no love, if anyone can help me please let me know!!!!!!
