I have read numerous articles about overclocking this processor. I havent found anything on doing it with the stock mobo though. So, with that being said..... Will upgrading to a modern mobo and DDR3 (from DDR2)ram increase my fps before overclocking? And what would be a good suggestion for an inexoensive mobo for my slim case?

Solution

No, this is the fastest (also lower power consumption than R7-250, 55W vs 65W):

It is highly unlikely that your low-profile bracket can fit another...

I still want to overclock...was just wondering if swapping the board and ram would yield better fps right off the top at all, before overclocking. Currently I am running stock mobo/stock 3.0 ghz processor/255w psu, 8gb DDR2 Corsair 8-8-8 15 @ 800 mhz, and an XFX R7-250 2gb low profile graphics with absolutley no hiccups or lag whatsoever. I can actually run my game at High settings at around 30-40 fps. This cpu is able to OC to 4 ghz, but I will most likely stop shy at aound 3.6 or so, from what I have been reading here.

If all you have is a 255w PSU you will need to replace that as well. So you are actually looking at a motherboard, Ram, PSU, and aftermarket cooler. Waste of money to do this completely. The prices on discontinued hardware usually rises, so a good overclocking board may run you more than you would expect. Especially a DDR3 version of socket 775 since there were very few models that supported DDR3. You are WAY better off getting hardware from this generation if you are looking to spend that much money.

I agree with everything that was previously stated by rolli59 as well.

Oh ok.. I was reading in this site that I could OC towards 3.6 with very little voltage increase for this particular cpu or all the extras. Is it possible to OC on the stock mobo or does it require a mobo specifically built for OCing?

Hello,

Having a slim case and a SFF PSU, you will have little to no power reserve, so I cannot recommend you to overclock the CPU. Also, when overclocking you must need a good cooler, but unfortunately there are just a few good ones which can fit in such cases. The best is to go for a CPU (G3258)+RAM+mobo (watch the compatible form-factor motherboards for your slim case).

There is something wrong with your RAM timings: DDR2 should have 4-4-4-12 or 5-5-5-15 at 800MHz; are you sure they aren't DDR3?

Sorry bout that... the timing is actually 5-5-5 18. Here is what I have:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145201&cm_re=corsair_DDR2_ram-_-20-145-201-_-Product

I have found a couple of psu's to choose from that will fit my case though; a 305w factory replacement, and a 350w aftermarket.

I only have $219 invested in this PC so far so I am happy as heck with my current results. Playing World of Tanks, I can play at low settings at 90+fps, med and high settings at 35-45fps, and ultra around 25-30fps. Not bad for an ancient machine that only had the ram and graphics card added!

You won't be overclocking on the stock board. I assume it is OEM, and 95% of the time the options are not even there. A good overclocking 775 board will be expensive and hard to find. Time to start looking at a new computer all together if you are going to spend as much as what you would be looking at.

Here is an example of what you would have to spend to get a good overclocking motherboard that supports DDR3 ram: http://www.ebay.com/itm/XFX-nForce-790i-Ultra-SLI-LGA-775-Socket-T-Intel-Motherboard-/111469429247?pt=Motherboards&hash=item19f41881ff#ht_2845wt_956 For $50-60 more you could get an 8 core FX AMD cpu and motherboard which can overclock much better and will give you a TON more performance, even at stock.

I am researching motherboard/processor combos, but I need to make sure to pick a processor that my graphics card will not bottleneck. That is my limitation because it has to be the low profile version and was advised that my XFX R7-250 (low profile kit incl.) is the fastest card I can fit in that slim case. However, Since I have the low profile bracket, can I use this bracket on other standard sized GPU's?

No, this is the fastest (also lower power consumption than R7-250, 55W vs 65W):
http://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-GeForce-DisplayPort-PCI-Express-GV-N750OC-2GL/dp/B00NFTNBNG/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1412987522&sr=1-5&keywords=low+profile+video+card

It is highly unlikely that your low-profile bracket can fit another card, even from the same manufacturer. Also, a standard-sized card will not fit in your case.

Which case is it by the way? It supports mATX / mITX?
For mATX: G3258 + DDR3 + http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157547 .
For mITX: G3258 + DDR3 + http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157526 .

If you can find a more potent PSU, you can go with an i5 instead of the Pentium.
