hi,
i have been asked to fix a freinds laptop.
the problem is that the system32 files are corrupt and i need to put the original windows disc in and boot it to repair the files but i am wondering weither to reset the whole thing and put home premium on it put dont know if i can reset it without losing all the data on it?
does anyone know how to retreive the data and reset it without losing everything?
please and thank you?

If safe mode works, that is probably the easiest way to get the data off, but a Linux LiveCD distribution is often very handy for this sort of thing as well.

You should be able to do a repair install without losing the data. Programs will need to be reinstalled, along with a large number of updates (possibly even service packs) will need to be applied, but the data will remain.
