Earlier I was replacing a crappy 500 watt iMicro power supply in my system with a brand new Corsair CX600m that I bought from Tigerdirect. The system was hooked up to a brand new Belkin surge protector also, with no storms present. I pressed the power button on the case, nothing happened, then about 5 seconds later, two loud pops come from the Corsair power supply and I saw 2 sparks coming from the fan on it. I instantly turned off the power supply, unplugged it, and removed it from my case. To insure no other parts were lost, I reinstalled the cheap 3-year-old iMicro power supply and everything booted fine.
I double checked that everything was installed correctly before powering on the Corsair, so I am unsure of what happened. The only difference between the PSUs is that the Corsair is more wattage and modular.
I'm just trying to figure out what has happened, and what would be best to do now.
System Specs:
cpu: i5 2320 @ 3.00 ghz
Case: Corsair Carbide Series 200R
mobo: Asus p8h61-m le/csm r2.0
Power Supply(old): iMicro PS-IM500
Power Supply(new): Corsair CX600m
