Could an extension cord potentially kill a ups battery?

Cause it seems like this is exactly what happened with two of my UPSs(same model). I had a UPS connected to an extension cord to run my PC and monitor. Lately, it seemed like the battery stopped charging and before long the ups would just die in like 3-4 seconds when the power went off. I replaced it with another UPS I had lying around and saw that it provided a decent backup of like 2-3 minutes. But after a day that UPS too stopped charging for some reason and now it dies instantly as well(tried charging it by connecting it directly to a wall socket but it doesn't seem to charge anymore). I know that the extension cord is probably the culprit but what I want to know is, why? The extension cord is rated at 6A 230V and the input rating of the ups is "230V 50/60hz 4.5A Max". It's a 600VA ups.
Thanks.

UPS batteries have to be replaced every 3 years or so depending on the use. A 600VA UPS is only usable for about 1/2 that load.

If that is not a brand new UPS, you probably need to replace the battery. A 600VA is too small IMO for anything but a network closet ...

Yeah I understand what you're talking about but how could a UPS backup time go from 2 minutes to like 3 seconds in just a day?
