If you want to play Angry Birds and check your f-ing email at Starbucks then buy a Mac...
You'd seriously buy a Mac, just to play one game or check your mail, when your Windows desktop can do just the same? Oh, and before you say: "at Starbucks", welcome to 20-f-ing-14, when the Internet doesn't care where you're browsing from, so long as you're not trying to access a site that's being firewalled.

You know what? Maybe you really shouldn't try to fix anything Microsoft's done. I wouldn't want to have to buy a Mac to play games or check my mails, thank you very much.

If Win 9 is coming out, I wonder when the beta phase will start? Usually at least 6-12 months ahead you get some releases from Microsoft to the Microsoft insiders.

They better hurry....and they better get some people with common sense and a pulse of what power users actually want. WINDOWS is for people doing real work. If you want to play Angry Birds and check your f-ing email at Starbucks then buy a Mac... 99% of professionals don't want that shittttty Metro interface and all that touch/social crap when they are getting down to work for 12 hours a day flying through 20 different apps, most open at the same time. We want lean and mean and have the ability to customize and do what we've been doing for 20 years on Windows. There's a reason Microsoft has 80% of the desktops worldwide.... they are only slipping the last few years because they keep dumbing it down and making it look more like Apple. The more you do that the more unclear the choice becomes between windows/ios. Microsoft HIRE me, I can fix up ALL of your BS in about 10 days. Seriously.
I think your "fix" is the start menu again. I think you've missed the mark, though. What really needs to happen for enterprise Windows 8 to take off is the opportunity for IT to use a tuned-up Windows Store to distribute custom apps company-wide. Build deployment options into Visual Studios and the appropriate build components and you've got a HUGE IT benefit. Modern apps would overtake traditional at an astonishing rate.

M$ needs to start doing what Apple is doing. Release os updates that add new and convenient features and under the hood improvements without major overhauls to the os interface, AND stop charging $100+ for upgrading yoUR OS. Apple has been charging ~30 for a well worthwhile upgrade and now all future updates are FREE
Apple can do that because they sell hardware which is tied into the OS but Microsoft can't really do that without losing a lot of money because for the most part they stay away from selling their own hardware. It's a totally different business model and Apple fanatics should really stop comparing the two companies.

It's not just Apple though. It's every other operating system in the world. People are used to free upgrades on their phones and tablets. Microsoft isn't providing enough justification as to why Windows 8, or now 9 I guess would warrant spending $100+ an upgrade.

The fact is that the business model is antiquated and obsolete. Microsoft even knows this which is why they are changing over to selling devices.

The big question is will Microsoft make Surface owners pay for the 9 upgrade? If so, it's just another reason why people will stick to Android and iOS over Windows.

I didn't bother reading the article because I honestly don't care much for Windows 8 or 9 or whatever. I'm perfectly happy with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit thank you very much. Unless and until they bring out something that is really worth the ridiculous pricing that MS expects then I'll look at upgrading, till then, no thank you.

Android is just based off Linux and is open source. Google offers the OS for free because they make money off app store sales not from selling android. It's a totally different story from Microsoft.

I understand that. The problem is that people don't care how the company producing the OS makes money, all they know is they get it for free. Same goes for iOS, Linux, Chrome, and any other operating system. All get upgrades for free. They aren't used to paying for firmware on any other device they use so why would they be quick to accept that model on their Windows devices?

The fact that Microsoft still relies on revenue from the sales of Windows means they are living in the past. It's a bad business model that won't work going forward.

I would simply like to see the ability to buy keys for a reduced price once you buy a retail disc so you can install multiple copies instead of buying more copies of software you do not need.I also agree there is nothing wrong with 7 besides needing a mild update at the hardware level like 8 has.4K native drives are not out yet but when they are 7 can't take advantage of this, if there even is an advantage.

Issue here is not the looks... it's functionality start menu offered much cleaner navigation. Metro is a touch screen GUI. There is order of magnitude precission issue when you use fingers and that's why metro is so bulky. Human eye serches much faster through ordered list than whole screen of differently shaped boxes. The difference is like between library and room where some kid has been playing with LEGO

lol @ saying the issue isn't the looks, then pointing out that the way it looks is the issue. to me, metro is way more clean looking than having to sort through the start menu lists or putting shortcuts on the desktop. i need photoshop? windows key > photoshop icon. it's quite simple. i'd much rather have the clean and hidden interface of the start screen than to have shortcuts pinned all over my desktop or scroll through lists of programs.

regardless, i dislike how people call metro solely a touch UI. i actually have an easier time navigating it on my desktop with keyboard and mouse than i do on my tablet.

1. They need to have some kind of upgrade from windows 8.1 and whether you bought it off the shelf or got it part of an OEM deal, the upgrade cost shouldn't vary. Meaning, if you have 8.1 pro, you should be able to get Windows 9 pro (etc.) for the same cost that it would cost you to go from Windows 8.1 home to windows 9 home. This would please me if I don't need to spend another $100 to go from my current OS to a better one. 2. With so much shakeup happening at MS, I am going to bet that this next version, much like their previous track record, will be 'what windows 8 was supposed to be', just as Windows 7 was what Vista was to be and XP was what ME was supposed to be. MS is known for having a dud every other OS. 3. Please build the next one so that it works WITH other operating systems instead of AGAINST them. Develop the low level API's and release them as licensed products which allow for end users to build a more customized and user friendly interface. If you want to package these API's into an operating system, so be it. Stop forcing the way YOU view how we should use a computer and instead, allow us to continue to utilize the products you develop how we feel they should be used. The insult we get from MS is that you think you know how we want to use a computer and this is very arrogant considering your place in the market is slipping.
