Couple of niggling issues with windows 10 (Tiles, taskbar, No internet)

Hi,

I use the "Combine when full" and do not show badges on taskbar. It shows an underline on all of the tabs. Is there a way to turn this off (I will use third party programs, group policy and/or regitry hacks if that's what it takes). It's really annoying.

I hate tiles with a passion. The very first thing I did once I installed W10 was to get rid of every tile, and turn everything tile related off. However, there is one service that Microsoft is forcing on people that seems to serve no purpose when tiles are disabled.

I'm referring to the "Tile data monitor service". When this is disabled, my PC takes an extra 20 - 25 seconds to login. If I enable the service it takes 1 - 2 seconds to log in.

My Windows 7 PC fully loaded runs 41 processes. My Windows 10 PC with nothing but the bare bones OS runs 108 processes. There are 57 svchost.exe processes alone. Disabling various useless services and functions (Like store, Cortana, OneDrive, and all Windows default apps) I've managed to get it down to 95.That's just crazy.

When my internet goes down or I disconnect the PC from the internet every time I boot up Edge starts with a page saying it is trying to establish connection to the internet. How do I stop this behavior?

thanks

i don't know if you can remove the line, it shows under any programs you have open on taskbar since you can pin programs there, its a visual sign to show they open. You may find 3rd party themes that can change it.

I don't look at start menu often enough to care about tiles in it.

creators edition changed how win 10 displays services in task manager. Up until 1703 there was only 16 or so service hosts but now every service has its own host - there aren't more running, its just ungrouped them so it appears to be more. You probably correct about having extras you don't need running, thats been case with every version of windows. Having a service host for every service may make troubleshooting easier in future - less guessing which service is to blame.

Indeed. The very presence of the taskbar tab is evidence that the program is open. It wouldn't be there if it wasn't open (Since I'm using Quick Launch and not jump lists).

I'm hoping so.. That is why I asked... To see if anyone knows of any 3rd party apps, Group Policy settings or registry hacks. I've been through the group policy settings, though, and I can't see anything related to it.

I live off the start menu. But the question wasn't about the start menu or the tiles on it. It was about the Tile Data Monitor Service causing logon delays of up to 25 seconds. I'm looking for a work around for that. Running a service to manage tiles seems useless when the tiles are not only removed, but disabled. It makes you wonder what else that service does that Microsoft is not being transparent about.

Fair enough. Good answer :)

It looks terrible though. I've disabled everything I can via group policy and settings. Clearly there are svchosts dedicated to services that are not even running and are disabled. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.. This is Microsoft after all

Also, I'm still looking for an answer regarding how to disable W10 from starting up Edge and trying to connect to the Internet every time I boot. The PC I'm planning to leave W10 on will not be connected to the internet 99.9% of the time.
