Hello all.

I've recently upgraded my build to a new ASRock Z790 Sonic, I9 13900k and Ryuo III 360. I turn it on and it seems fine. This new i9 states the base speed is 3.00GHz, however at this moment it is running at 4.71GHz and it is constantly changing.

Now If I'm idle everything seems to be fine, fans are quiet and all is well, but if I open a game such as WOW the CPU goes to about 60c and then the RYUO kicks in, now this gets loud, like way to loud. I was running WOW on an i7 8700K 3.7GHz with a Corsair H55 Hydro and that never got loud and the games runs the same (no GPU changes etc). Have I done something wrong? Can I undervolt the CPU? I've closed WOW and the fans are still going at that speed, they aren't decreasing. They only go back to "normal" if I shutdown and start again (restart only reduces the speed, but doesn't fully reduce them). I understand the CPU fans may need to go that loud to reduce the heat, but I'm only playing WOW.

I've attached a video to try and explain what is going on:

Also in the video you can hear one of the fans seems to squeak... So I best get in touch with the seller and get a replacement fan...

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Solution
Yes just check that you have selected the option in bios to use the intel recommended settings. The out of the box option...especially with asus..was a overclocked setting.
You would hope with all this new pressure the "default" out the box option on asus motherboards is the actual intel default recommendation. Even your fairly advanced user that could build his own pc tended to miss that asus was overclocking by default.

Pretty much mess with the fan curves until you get them to values you like. I would set them manually and rate what you consider low/medium/high noise levels. Then set your fans based on that. What I suspect you will find is that you seldom hear the AIO or case fans it is the video card ramping up that...

What did you upgrade from? Did you reinstall the OS after the motherboard swap?

BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time? What is the make and model of your case? Fan's make and model as well as their number and orientation?

BIOS: 1.20
Case: Cooler Master MasterCase H500P
Fans: Two fans at the front, 3 fans for the CPU cooler and one at the back pushing air out.

I'm gonna try a bios update as it seems mine is very old

I've updated to BIOS 11.12. It took a little longer, but the fans still go crazy after a min or two of WOW. According to HWMonitor CPU got to 71c CPUFANIN is currently 1050rpm and AUXFAININ is currently 1400-1500rpm and once again the fans just don't die down. CPU is at 2% usage

BIOS has a curve setup it goes to about 100% of the cpu hits 70c, I was thinking can I not just undervolt it or disable the dynamic speeds for the cpu? Maybe just having a more consistent base speed would be better

100% at 70c is way too aggressive for a CPU that's going to run into the 90s under heavy load so this is the entirety of your problem. You'd want it to hit maybe 60% at 70c.

Ah ok, so can this cpu run at 100c? I understand it probably shouldn't sit at that for long peroids but running around 70c for long periods is fine?

Any idea on why the fan speed never seems to drop back down?

Quite frankly it can run over 90c for extended periods of time and shouldn't matter.

If I had to guess it'd be where your curve is starting temperature wise. I looked up the cooler and the fans are rated at 2200 RPM so if your aux is the AIO fans that means they're running over 70% most of the time. With fans that high RPM you could probably run them at around 35-40% most of the time.

I will have to play around with tye fan speed etc on cpu temp. May I ask do you also have a 13900k? If do what temps do you get?

Also as my Ryuo iii 360 squeaks I'm hoping to get a refund and going for a CORSAIR iCUE LINK H150i that should be as good right?

I am going to bet asus has some fan control software in that massive package of garbage they load with the motherboard or AIO. In addition to all the fancy led control they most times let you set fan curves.

Not sure if you have been keeping up on the news and intel backing down on the recommended maximum setting and the controversy involving motherboard manufactures and their aggressive default settings.

It has been very common to set the power limits on 13900k so they will attempt to run at the thermal limit of 100c all the time. Intel has for a long time said that it will cause you no issue to run at 100c indefinitely. Most cpus have no issues at all doing this but it seems a small but fairly significant number will crash in some games if you set them too aggressively.

Asus like other should have released a bios update that now has a option to use the intel recommended values and not the overclocked ones.

This though has resulted in a fairly significant drop in the performance compare to say the amd cpu.....this is where most the controversy comes where intel and board manufactures were setting thing high to get good reviews/benchmarks.

With the default setting and pretty much any 360aio I bet you don't get to even 90c even running cinebench.

Yeah I haven't really kept up to date on hardware at all, I'm more of a software person me self :). So basically if I leave the current CPU settings and play around with the fan speeds under specific CPU temps I should be good?

A added note. Since you paid the money for a 13900k and a fancy motherboard that is designed for overclocking you might want to adjust the power setting to see what your cpu and motherboard can do. The vast majority of consumers have been running overclocked for years with no issue and this has only lately been identified.

I'm not looking to overclock as I'm not a massive gamer and to be honest my old i7 was fine, but it died after 6 years of service. I just want to make sure my CPU is kept at a safe temperature and my AIO fans don't take off for no reason. I will try and take a look at the BIOS later today and let you know if I find anything. I did get a 1000w PSU which is probably also overkill. My GPU is 1080 ti which is a little old but never got loud in my old build.

I went into BIOS and reset to default. It seems to have calmed down, it sometimes goes a little fast if the CPU hits 70c but it usually goes straight back down to 50c. I will keep an eye on it tonight while I play. Thank you everyone for replying.

It does suck though because as one of the fans seems to squeak, I'm gonna have to install a new cpu cooler at some point.
