cpu clock dropping from 3800 to 1400 mhz randomly

I now plan to overclock my cpu so i did a little research how on my mobo then I saw that it has issues on throttling the cpu so I checked cpu z and saw that my clock speed drops. Is this what they mean throttling? Is there a fix for this mobo so I can OC it safely

cpu: fx 6300
mobo: 990fxa ud3 rev 3
gpu:hd 7850 2gb
psu:seasonic 520 bronze modular
cpu fan:stock

cpu conserves power by throttling itself when idle.

That's normal assuming you have not changed anything from the BIOS defaults.

i disabled the cool and quiet and its stable now. Is there a downside to this? And are there users who use gigabyte 990fxa ud3 rev 3 with 6300 heard theres a problem with the vrm and overclocking

it has nothing to do with the vrm. When you're idling and you have Cool and Quiet on, your CPU with lower its voltage as well as it's clock speed

The 990FX series boards are designed for OCing, no problems with VRMs or Power Phase design. As has been said above the clock speed dropping is just a power saving feature. Now if it was dropping under 100% load that would be a different story.

If you're planning to overclock ensure you do it safely and manually (don't bother with automated programs that claim to tune it correctly), and with an aftermarket cooling solution - the stock cooler is pretty bad. Don't disable the cool and quiet, you can just use the AMD Catalyst to adjust your clock speed to 3.5ghz+ 😀

i need help with this too, i have AMD fx 8320 and also getting same problem.
problem is that this happens when CPU is on full charge, i also disabled cool n quiet, tried everything, also set clock in AMD catalyst...
any idea guys????
