Hi,

I’m building a new pc and i got to the point were i have to mount the screws to the CPU cooler. I see the company forgot 1 screw and it will take days before it arives, can i just use only 3 screws or Shall i use 4?

Any help is appreciated :)

What is the make and model of your CPU cooler? Off the top of my head, the 4 screws are necessary to ensure that you have an even mounting pressure on the CPU IHS. Are you working with the stock bundled cooler or an aftermarket cooler? What is your processor?

Home Depot has a large selection of screws. Bring one of yours as a sample to match the right screw. They need to be exact, or you'll ruin the threads in the part that the screw goes into. You have to match all dimensions of the screw, and to a lesser extent the head style. Matching the threads is very important. If you take your original screw and lay it against the one you're testing (heads opposite each other, like -ahem- the number 69), the threads should mesh neatly. Hold it up to the light to make sure. Some metric and SAE threads are pretty close, but not the same. Another way to determine thread type is to take a nut with known specifications that looks close to what you need (or just bring the cooler part with you) and thread a screw into it. Never force anything. If they don't screw together smoothly, it's not the right match. Or...just wait for the manufacturer to send you the required screw.
