Hello! So I bought some new PC parts and noticed that my i7 6700k has no stock CPU cooler ... and I dont have enough money to buy a decent cooler. There's a store nearby that sells the "Alpine 11 Pro rev.2" for really cheap. Will it work? I won't do any overclocking (Well , duh) or anything CPU intensive.

Solution

It's a quiet CPU cooler, rated for 95W (the i7-6700K is 91W, although Toms' review shows it pulling 100W), so it should work, although I wouldn't expect stellar cooling performance so close to its design limit. Although it doesn't state socket 1151, I believe the holes in the board are in the same place as socket 1150 (it's only a difference on the CPU pins).

My recommendation would be the:
Cryorig H7

If that is unavailable try:
Hyper 212 Evo

Thanks! I'll only use it for a month or two and get a Corsair H60 or H100i. About compatibility, My friend is using his old cooler from a socket 1155 on his new Skylake build so the Alpine 11 should work :)

Although x3 wombo combo

?
So he got another Intel stock cooler to work with his Skylake CPU? which CPU he got? and what are his temps? if you don't mind sharing, I'm in the same situation as you and I'm interested to know thanks!

He used a Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO (Not exactly that old , but thats the one he used). I think the Intel stock cooler should work , But dont overclock and try getting a better cooler as soon as possible.

honestly for the money you would be best maxing out with a phanteks tc12dx or similar dual 120mm designed fan. for right about $50 its noticeably better than the hyper 212 evo and decent on your wallet.

if you are looking at water for looks that i can understand. otherwise overclocking headroom wont go up very much from the best reviewed $50 coolers compared to $100 options all around. on a 6700k at best you can run 0.05v higher vcore and gain about 0.2ghz of frequency. admittedly even the phanteks 120mm fan will likely only allow +0.025v and +0.1ghz respectively over a common hyper 212 but it will do so with a slightly better noise profile.

at least that is my personal take on it. as far as voltages are concerned i like to play on the conservative side and like to be 0.025-0.050v lower than the agreed upon 99% overclockers limit.

I'm kind of confused, OP says he has no stock cooler, but kray says that the stock cooler should work, does the i7 6700k come with a stock cooler and heatsink?

I ask this because my i7 6700k comes in today and I may need to return my liquid cpu cooler and get a new one, so the time in between that happens, ill most likely use the stock cooler. Can anyone confirm/deny?

no it doesn't. the new k models from intel no longer come with stock coolers. To keep costs down for them the prices however have stayed the same. Their enthusiast level products so they assume that you have your own cooler. That said, Hyper 212 plus does not work with the 1151 mounting. You can get about 3 screws in but the last will not fit. If you do get it in you risk stripping the screw. I finally got mine to work with just 3 retention screws.
