CPU core failing and low fps

I've been getting a lower fps than I used t😵ne of my cores repeatedly fails the test on prime 95 and a hardware failure is detected, my processor is an fx-8350 and I have an r9 280x.

My temps are fine and I have defragged my hard drive my case is clean and I did a virus scan with malwarebytes, I ran some tests with sea tools for windows and that doesn't flag up any errors

When I first load up a game I have a low fps and some stuttering for about 15 seconds, this will go away and I'll be fine unless I move to a different area (if the game is large enough to allow this) and the fps will dip for the same amount of time and then recover. For example in BF4 conquest my fps is low for a bit when I first spawn in and it then recovers, but if I drive for 15 seconds the fps will dip and then recover in the same way. But in Counter strike Global offensive I only get the first fps drop.

Any help would be appreciated

Let's start on the idea of how these games work. I'm assuming you get horrible FPS in Minecraft? It's actually a nice benchmarking tool. The games will load up new regions of the game, and that's causing your issue.

I'm assuming that your CPU is throttling itself, so if you have it overclocked, bring it down to stock, test it the way you described with BF4, and see if it holds. If not, go download Asus's CPU-Z, and have that open while you play. If you have a second screen, put it there. Watch the core clock rates when it lags. Also go download MSI Afterburner, and watch the GPU clock, usage, temps, and the mem clock, usage and temps.

If it still drops, I'd try to get into contact with AMD for a return. AMD CPUs tend to have a higher failure rate, due to the fact that they have to make them very cheaply, because Intel owns most of the market.

Hope it helps!

Thanks, my fps in minecraft is low if I am in a big world and exploring, but if I stay in my house my fps is fine- my cpu is stock. I probably should have mentioned it but I have already downloaded MSI afterburner and my GPU usage is high (100) the gpu clocks are what they should be (1020 and 1500) and my CPU usage darts around from 100 and down to 75 when gaming. I'll download Asus' CPU-Z and try that. Also I sometimes get mini freezes in bf3+4 that lasts around 1/2, I have a graph enabled on BF4 that shows cpu+gpu usage and the CPU line jumps really high- almost to the top of the screen when this happens.
Thanks for the help !

Would it matter if my CPU is almost a year old at this point ?

My CPU is at 4.2ghz with a multiplier of 20.5, when I load into a BF4 game the ground textures are really bad and have a low res, but after about 30 seconds it will be back to normal

Do you think they would send me a new one on the basis of it failing prime 95? I think that my hard drive might be the problem as the low fps is most prominent when first loading the game/ different bits of it and the HDD has to retrieve the textures and what not. So I wouldn't like to go through the hassle of returning my chip and having to be without one if it isn't going to make a difference and it's the HDD's fault.
