So I thought I'd post this to potentially help out someone in a similar situation.
I'm a first time pc builder and when my computer didn't boot I wasn't worried because I knew there was a high chance this would happen. When I turned the computer on, the lights would come on, fans would briefly spin and the cpu debug led on the mobo would flash. This would happen for like half a second and then everything would turn off.
So I did the logical thing and reseated the cpu AND the cooler (seriously fuck coolers btw) many, many times. I stripped everything down, tried each part individually and the same result each time. Then I tried the paper clip pin thing to test the psu and it didn't work. So I figured I'd finally found the problem, a friend brought a spare psu over and the same thing happened...which was a little strange.
I'd all but given up so I tried switching up the power cords. The table where I was working, I had two extension cords: a brand new one connected to the computer and an old shitty one connected to the monitor. So I switched up the ports, that didn't work and then last ditch effort, I swapped the extension cords and lo and behold the crappy, yellow, decades old extension cord worked and the new one didn't. Strangely enough, I tested the new extension cord on some other stuff and it worked, it just specifically doesn't work with my computer.
After more than a week of trying absolutely everything, I even cleared the cmos drive for christs sake, it now works just as I was about to take it into the store.
TLDR: CHECK THE EXTENSION CORDS!
Hope this helps someone else
