Hey so I just got my gtx 1070, and am able to max out most games at 60fps with the exception of far cry 5, which I am only able to run on about medium settings with occasional fps drops. Is this normal? I believe it could be my CPU which is a core i3 7100. Should I get a new one, and if so which one?

Thanks, Tim

Yes I hear all these answers and opinions. If you stretching out that much on a 7700K, those funds can go on a brand new z370 mid range board and slap in a 6core 8400.
Its simple, if you dont want to bottleneck your card and save Green, get a 7600 (non K). If your gonna be spending some Green for a K version, all that cash would be better suited for a z370 with a better upgrade path rather than spending it on a 7700K on a low end motherboard.

I personally would not be spending money on a 7700K unless you can find one dirt cheap. Sure performance is great, but you have no upgrade path on a low end motherboard. Forget OC as the VRM on that board would be a joke

To answer your question, the K versions on Coffee Lake CPU's are clocked...

You can throw in a intel i5 7400 or 7500 (non K) for that Motherboard. Id probaly stay away from getting a i5 7600
I wouldnt be throwing in an In I7 or any K versions as that Motherboard is very low end and poor VRM.

If it were me, it be putting my money on Z370 (intel) or X470 (ryzen) and putting money on a midrange Cpu such as Ryzen 2600X or 8600K to pair it nicely with that 1070.

If money is a factor and is something to get you buy, you can slap in that 7500 and that will give you a big boost

If you can find a good deal on the 7700k, I'd just drop that in, and ignore everything else. The i7 will last you longer than any i5 or i3. Providing you with longevity to be able to handle future GPU's. This is to prevent you from running into the same CPU bottleneck issue you're currently experiencing right now.

Get the 7700k.

The motherboard doesn't matter. If it can power the CPU, it will yield the same performance numbers as any high end motherboard. The difference in motherboards, are the ability to overclock with stability and achieve higher overclocks. If he is running stock. the i7 7700k is by far the best chip he can drop into that motherboard.

Isn't the i7 overkill? And would it be a waste getting a k as my motherboard doesn't support overclocking? I was looking at the i5 7500 and put it into a bottleneck calculator with the rest of my rig, and was told I'd get a 13% bottleneck. And it commended a intel xeon e5-267 as the best cpu for me with a 1% bottleneck, is this a better option that the i5 7500?

The choice of an i7 is never overkill my friend. Even if you don't overclock the K chip, it is still the top performer for your chipset, and it will utilize the GTX 1070 to its maximum capabilities. It will also provide you with plenty of longevity. You won't have to upgrade your CPU for at least the next 6 years. If it were up to me, I'd take 6 years of Longevity over 2-3 years. You're already on an i3, the i5 7500 aint gonna be that "huge" of an upgrade for you. But, the i7 7700k definitely will be.

Don't really want to upgrade the board, could I get a i5 8400 without the z370?

No you can't get an i5 8400 without a motherboard upgrade. That's why its best to keep the board you got. Besides, intel makes its almost impossible to have future upgrade paths without the need of a motherboard swap anyways. So, it makes no sense to buy a new motherboard when you're current motherboard isn't even obsolete yet. So, just drop in a i7 7700k and call it a day, and forget about upgrades for the next 6 years.
