My AMD x4 860k gets maxed out to 100% in games making the gpu usage to drop severely...the thing is it only happens when its overclocked, if im running the cpu at stock speeds i dont ecounter the same problem! Whats going on?
What motherboard? Some motherboards will poor VRM's or VRM cooling can overheat under load, the motherboard then drops the cpu speed to reduce the load so the VRM's do not fry. Unfortunately you wont find a temperature reading for the VRM's. This fits as the problem only occurs when overclocking which is when the VRM's would be under most load.
overclocking and cpu usage are not direectly connected, that said, what is connected is your throttling, and overclocking.
likely your cpu gets to 100% under non overclock the temperature of the cpu is under 80'c and smoothly processes the data
likely your cpu gets 100% while overclocked, the temp become too much and raises above 80-90 and causes the CPU to slow down trying to cool down before it burns out.
load HWINFO, run your game and see if the whole CPU overclocked is overheating or maybe just one core.
what temps do you get....?
I have an after market cooler with decent thermal compound and I get 61 C in AIDA64 cpu stress test when overclocked to 4.4 Ghz. So i guess its not my temps...

It s the lowest end chipset(a55) that fm2+ offers...so now that you are telling me this I really do think its the motherboard that causes me problems with overclocking. I wasnt really sure so I asked here. Thank!
