I am upgrading a friends pc to an i7 4790k and a msi gtx970. The existing psu is a 550w. If that enough or does it need to be upgraded? It's also running 12 fans a self contained liquid cpu cooler as well.
Yes get 1000 Watts if your going to be running 3 video cards for a single 970 (170 watt video card) just because your running 12 fans for some reason, really 12? Get a 650 at least.
The minimum SYSTEM PSU is 500W. That is assuming normal operating conditions (maybe 2-3 fans, hd, etc. The OP has a liquid cooler (resource hog), 12 fans, and an i7 that consumes on average ~125watts. 1000 is not overkill. A lower rated 650w PSU would be strained.
