So i got an i5-3470 and an intel mobo.

tought of cleaning it so i removed the processor, to my surprise it has no pins!. all the pins were left inside the mobo socket.

i did not touch anything, just cleaned the thermal paste and put back the procie to the socket.

to my surprise it booted and showed windows.

so if i was to change a mobo should i manually pick the left pins inside the mobo and just allocate them the same way they were allocated on the intel mobo? will it work? - or even without the pins will the processor work?

thanks.....

Solution
Intel has been using LGA ("Land Grid Array" - no pins on the CPU, only "lands") sockets since the LGA775 Pentium 4 about 10 years ago. As others have said above, the pins are in the socket and are somewhat fragile, so don't mess with them nor drop anything on them.
Don't mess with the pins, they're supposed to be inside the socket. It's not like the older cpu's where the pins were on the cpu and fit into holes in the socket. The pins are now on the socket and the cpu instead has 'pads' where the pins press against when it's locked into place. Everything is normal.

yeah, and to be sure, spot-weld that mofo in place, so that you NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE can remove it. in fact, forget spot welding - run a continuous bead weld along the outside. and then bolt it in place with some 1/2" tamper-proof bolts. then dip everything in epoxy, and then concrete. then put it in a vault and don't even LOOK at it.

I know there will still be enough of us to show a small demand. But as more people move to laptops and mobile devices, our choices will continue to shrink. Even Wally World has stopped stocking desktops now. Our only hope is that businesses will still need workstations. I wonder how life would be for us if Xeons were our only choice?

I am stopping my replies to avoid hi-jacking this thread.

Yes he did, and with that this conversation should be over, he is probably just trolling

"Very fragile". Intel got tired of bent cpu pins. Now the mobo manufacturers get all the frustration of people RMA'ing cause bozos ruin the cpu socket.

Don't be ridiculous, removing and reinstalling CPUs is a very easy task that's essentially risk free as long as reasonable care is taken.

Intel's Mobile CPUs use the G2 socket (those that aren't soldered on directly) which is still PGA based rather than the LGA based desktops and servers. With that said, there's no mobile CPU with the i5-4460 designation.

Let me see if I get this straight: According to Tom's Hardware you are a "CPU Authority", yet you expected a Core i5 to have pins? It's like being a mechanic at Ferrari and not knowing Ferrari cars have wheels.
Anyway, yes, ever since the Pentium 4 era (socket 775) Intel CPUs have had on-chip contacts while the "pins" have been on the motherboard.

highly misleading! lol

This came as a rude shock to me too, how dare they...

From building an i7 920 and 2600 systems some years ago, i swore to myself thinking i thought i remembered there being pins. But no, looking through the motherboard manuals lol "make sure the motherboard pins aren't bent" confirms it for me as well.

Thought i'd notice there not any pins under cpu, obviously not lol.

what happened here? ahha, yep just checked my 4460 it does not have pins,.. sorry guys just did not notice that intel was using pinless procie compared to amd.. and yep reinstalling thermal paste and aftermarket cooler is just a piece of cake, just be carefule, i have done it a lot of times on amd procies so i got quite a scare when i did it on an intel ahhaha.. sori guys!

now i know :D thanks..

This may have been the most amusing threads I have ever read. So much confusion mixed with dry, passive-aggressive humour! Best one in a long time. I actually read every comment it was so fun. Pins on that chip....hee hee hee! Have fun with that!
