The motherboard has pins on it where it touches the CPU in specific areas. If the CPU is not seated correctly, you could bend the pins and ruin the motherboard, and ruin the CPU while your at it

Using it is the check. You could run a stress test to see if it's unstable, but if its working thank the socket gods and enjoy your PC
