Hey I just started geting into messing around with some older hardware, my friend gave me Dell Optiplex 745 with a LGA 775 socket.. I came across something about modding a xeon E LGA 771 to fit with an adapter.. I looked online for different mods like this.

Is there somewhere I can find more info about CPU modding?

Important is to know which chipset is the dell, then check compatibility, in rare situation sometimes speedstep doesnt work as Ive read.
Ebay has allready pre made cpus for 775 socket to fit because they made holes for the notches with sticker very cheap, unless you wanna yourself to do the socket surgery.
Never done the xeon mod, but be carefull about flashing bios with microcodes, you have to remove the P4 775 from it and leave few KBs for it as I had accident with bricking 775Dual-vsta motherboard...
Note: On site there are full tutorials for flashing microcodes and pre made xeon microcodes.

The Opti 745 is interesting. It has some limits, but also deosn't have others. It's not a candidiate for Xeon swapping. But due to it's Pentium4, PentiumD roots it can support a 130W CPU. It does have a 266fsb limit and this includes SetFSB hacking. Due to age it doesn't support 45nm CPUs. This leaves the 65nm Core2 Extremes. The only one worth the trouble is the QX6800 SLACP G0 stepping. Base clock 2.93GHz (11x266) unlocked multiplier and Voltage. Due to the 3 phase VRM it won't OC as far as the Dimension E520, But I've taken one to 3.45 GHz easily. Cooler D9729 and some heatsinks on the VRM MOSFETs will cool it. Throttlestop 6.0 software is needed to access the settings.

At stock speed the QX6800 just about equals a Q9400. At 3.45Ghz it will just about equal a Q9650 more or less.
You can replace the Opti fan and housing with an AFC1512DG bare fan. Just velcro it in place and duct tape a small gap on one side.

If you do the above and you like it The Zotac GTX1050 or Ti Mini will fit. I did a test fit and it touches a couple capacitors on the MB but can be installed and tested before deciding whether to trim the plastic shhroud or just leave it. The base 1050 2GB is a safer bet because the 4GB version can run into occasional system resource conflicts in an 8GB limited computer.

I have made an assumption here that the computer he gave you was the Mini Tower version. The DT and SFF versions are much less desireable but can be used also. Different coolers and GPU solutions required.
