CPU opinions Intel or AMD

Hello, all:

My current home-built PC died after five years of use and I am in the market to replace and rebuild. This will be my third home-built PC, so I'm just looking into some ideas from the community for suggestions and ideas to get a more well-rounded and informed idea in my head (since a lot has changed, obviously, since building 5 years ago).

Some info on my situation/history: Past three machines have been AMD-based. Wondering if I should just stick with what I know or try out one of the newer Intel processors. Machine will be used for general tasks, gaming and maybe some light streaming on Twitch. Would love to "future proof" myself as best I can. Not too sure on overclocking as I've never done that before, interested but also kind of scared of messing something up lol. Budget, not looking to exceed more than $1,500 USD. Not going to be picking up some things, such as, PSU (have a 750w waiting) and GPU.

Really, just looking for some input on the CPU since it all, really, starts there and generally everthing else will fall into place.

Thanks!

Depending on where you live, there are two answers to your question. You should never buy something because it's called AMD, Intel, Nvidia, etc. It's just crazy to do that. Look for something that fits your needs, and that's it. AMD doesn't really have anything new on the CPU front, so I suggest going with Intel. You mentioned that CPU is your focus, it really shouldn't be in a gaming system. Get a 980 Ti, or something along those lines, then buy the rest around that.

Yup, as stated, GPU is already covered :) The reason why I'm asking about the CPU is because I am trying to future proof myself for the next several+ years and it's generally easier to upgrade the GPU as needed. And, well, I kind of have to buy something "because it's called AMD, Intel," because what other CPUs would I pick from ;)?

Yeah don't buy something because its Intel or AMD... although those are your only two choice hehe. If you want to be as future proof as possible, you probably want the top of the line 6th gen I7...they are actually cheaper than the 5th gen top of the line (5960x). You should be able to pair the 6th gen I7 with a high end GPU and still stay under $1500 if you don't go crazy with other components.

As others said, if you want some "future" proof CPU that the only option is Intel, they just released new CPUs (Skylake), so you should get Skylake i7 or i5 depends on your needs. Only for gaming and other basic stuff you should get i5 but if you plan on doing some video editing, streaming games and things like that than i7 would be a better option.

AMDs best CPUs are still old ones on AM3+ socket, so not even a bit future proof
