So in the last few months I've noticed a significant increase in my CPU Temperature.

Here's a quick peak as to what I'm dealing with.

I've contacted ASUS, they've been nothing but a royal pain in the butt. I've contacted Intel and they've offered to replace my CPU, but only after I update my BIOS.

I've never done a BIOS update. I'm not entirely sure how to go about it. Another reason I've decided to post here on Tom's Hardware.

Here are my Computer Specs:

CPU: Intel Quad Core 2 2.66Ghz LGA775
Mobo: ASUS Rampage Extreme
GFX: NVidia GeForce 9800GTX+
HDD1: Western Digital Caviar Blue 160GB
HDD2: Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB
HDD3: Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB
HDD4: Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB
HDD5: Western Digital Blue 640GB
PSU: OCZ GameXStream 600W ATX12V
RAM: G.Skill 2x 2GB 240Pin DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Case: Sunbeam Transformer Black Steel ATX Full Tower

Can you computer Genius's help me fix my rig so I can have it for College?

I don't have any thermal paste right now.

My friend Drew told me to get new paste, and buy a new heatsink. A few other people who have bought the same processor as I have, replaced the heatsink because it sucks.

Solution

Well, I wouldn't mind getting a new heat sink. I just want something that'll keep it cool, my computers ONLY a year old, so yeah.

So rolli59, I did the BIOS update and now my computer runs at less than 100degree's Fahrenheit. That's with Firefox, MSN Live, and EPU Engine up and running.

I spoke to Intel again, and now that they've seen the changes with the CPU & Heating, they think it's a faulty heatsink after I told them how much of a pain in the butt it was to put on.

They're sending me a new one, and a box to send back the old one. Though I do hope i get to keep it 😛 It still works fabulously.

Thanks again Rolli59!
