CPU Power Failure?

Hi guys,

First time on here so here`s hoping...

I have an Intel D850GB Motherboard socket 423 (replacement) - brought this for a friends PC (yes it`s very old).
I am sure there is nothing wrong with CD drive, hard drive, graphics card, power supply and RAM.

When I leave the 4 pin CPU power connector out the machine fires up but obviously does not POST, when I plug the power in the whole thing is dead apart from the little green light on the Motherboard. The battery on the motherboard is fine.

I have taken the CPU out of an old motherboard that failed and inserted it into the new one, before the old motherboard failed I replaced a ram card - which was working fine before I removed it - and began to smell electrical burning. I am 100% sure that the RAM was inserted properly but after this the motherboard would not POST - this is exactly the same situation I have with the new board with new RAM.

As I have not had the new board (second hand) running I can`t check the BIOS settings - I don`t have the Floppy drive plugged in just HD and CD drives - Would the lack of a floppy drive cause no power up with an old MB?

After all that the main question is do you guys think the CPU is fried or could it be something else?

Paul...
Cheers fella but it`s not the old board that concerns me, it`s the new one with new RAM using the old CPU!

UPDATE - The MB fires up with the CPU 4 pin power plug plugged in but won`t post - same as the old board.
The only thing that remains from the old board is the processor - could this be the problem?
I don`t usually have problems with these things but have never encountered a fried processor so I`m not sure what symptoms this problem would cause...
