My Gigabyte B850 AORUS Elite WiFi7 mobo has both a 2x4 and a 2x2 header for CPU power, but my Gigabyte GP-AE850PM PG5 PSU doesn't have any 2x2 power lines. If the system I've built with these components won't power up, does that mean I've made a misstep in my work? Or does it mean I have to find a way to provide power to the 2x2 header? And if so, how can I do that?

No 8 pin and 4 pin. The PSU 4+4 connector will come apart for the 4 pin. Usually they will start with just the 8 pin installed.
1 x 8-pin ATX 12V power connector
1 x 4-pin ATX 12V power connector

Power supply.
CPU/EPS 4+4 Pin x 2
