Hello!
I've been having this problem with my CPU. I would play almost any game like GTA V, CSGO etc. Everything would be normal, my cpu's temp is around 40°C and suddenly it would change to 206°C and my pc's performance drops to like 20%. Then I have to restart my PC for it to be normal again.

Specs:
MoBo: MSI 760GM-P23(FX) (MS-7641)
CPU: AMD FX(tm) -6100
GPU: MSI GeForce 1050 Ti
Any solutions?

So I'm using the built in msi afterburner tool to see my fps, cpu usage and temps. When it hits 206°C, i turn off the game and check amd overdrive for temps and it shows the same.
This is definitely a sensor issue. Not surprising given the age of the components. If you actually hit 206C, the motherboard would be damaged to the point of failure, including the CPU and CPU socket. Your system would shutdown well before reaching this temperature.
There is no way your CPU temperature is getting that high, your computer would shut itself down well before that point if it were the case.

Having said that, it does look like you are thermal throttling. For FX CPUs AMD Overdrive is about the only reliable utility for checking temperatures, so try running that and see what the temps actually are. Check to make sure your CPU fan is still spinning and isn't jammed or seized up, and given the age of this system you may have to replace the thermal paste and remount the cooler.

If it were actually 206C (402.8F), the system would be damaged beyond repair. The boiling point of water is 100C.

This is likely a sensor issue. How are you measuring your operating temperatures?

I don't have a stock cooler, I don't really know the brand of my cooler but it looks pretty decent and seems to be spinning. Also when it reads 206°C, the feel if the air flowing doesn't change, it's kind of warmish but more to the cold side. Paste was changed like a year ago as well.

What components should I change?

Personally, I would not spend any money on an AM3-based rig. Instead, I would replace the CPU, motherboard, and memory (at a minimum) with a modern AM4 based system.

You could start a thread in the Systems section of the forum to get great recommendations on a new build. Provide as much info about what you need, intend to reuse for your current system, and your budget.
