CPU running at 100 percent in games

I have an i5-3570k overclocked to 4.2 ghz and i'm finding that in games like MGSV Ground Zeroes and Saints Row 4 it's using 100 percent of my CPU. I realize that some games are CPU heavy but shouldn't 4.2 ghz be more than enough to run these games on a 1080p display? I'm currently using my old gtx 760 because my 970 was having usage issues (low usage) I thought it might be due to my cpu but my 760 gpu usage is fine.

in smite in fact it's sticking around 90-100 percent while gpu usage sits at 60. how could my cpu be bottlenecking my 760 even?

They may be reserving 100% "cause it's there" but not using .... are you reading 100% in Task Manager ?

Single or multi player ?

when it wasn't overclocked it was using a similar percentage so how can that be?

yeah i'm reading it in task manager and H/W monitor. singleplayer

update: just noticed my frames dropping below 60 in smite while gpu usage also sat around 60 percent. maybe my issue with the 970 really was a cpu bottleneck. what could be wrong with my cpu? i've run stability tests and everything seems fine.

Strange. Do you have Vsync enabled? Check your drivers and temps.

my temps are fine and no vsync isnt enabled

PSU is possible. What do you have? And what are your temps exactly? It's sounds like this isn't much of an issue, are you getting performance problems, or is it just reading high cpu usage?

not a problem just a concern really. and trying to figure out if it has to do with my low gpu usage with the 970, but i think that's an entirely separate issue.

i have a cooler master silent pro 700w.

and my temps are usually under 52

Temps are pretty low, and that's a good PSU, I'm running a 600w with a 970 and no problems.

I'm suspicious that your mobo/PCIe connector is limiting your performance, but that's a wild guess.

Hope you figure it out, I got nothing else.
