CPU Running At Critical Temps (Yeah, another overheating thread)

Hi guys, first off here are the specs of my computer.

OS: Windows 7
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600 @ 3.4GHz
RAM: 8GB
Motherboard: MSI H67MA-E35
GPU: Intel HD Graphics
HD: 931GB Seagate ST31000524AS ATA
Heatsink: Stock Intel Cooler

Now, the problem is that I am getting EXTREME temperatures ONLY whilst running games. It is an online game that is NOT graphically intensive compared to modern games. My CPU temps get up to 96c (Max) when playing this game. If I turn the graphics settings down to the absolute minimum, it slowly drops to about 74c.

As soon as I close the game, it will go from 96c all the way back down to around 40c in a matter of seconds.

So, I bought a new replacement heatsink (as well as a couple of extra case fans that haven't arrived yet). A stock Intel heatsink which is exactly the same as my old one. The heat issue still persists. I have heard that the stock ones are terrible, but COME ON! 96c!? :??:

And before you ask, I cleaned the old thermal paste off the CPU. I installed it in one go (so no issues with ruining the pre-applied thermal paste). All of the clips are DEFINITELY securely locked down.

Is there likely to be something else wrong with my CPU that's causing these temps? Or is the stock cooler really THAT bad? I've seen other posts on here with stock cooler issues, but none as hot as mine. Will buying a better (CoolerMaster Hyper212 EVO) cooler really fix the problem? I would hate to find that after installing it, that the problem still persists!

In the meantime, I will have to play the game with minimum graphics settings. I believe 74c is not optimal, but it's not dangerous either. I have no idea how long this problem has been going on for, as I only spontaneously checked the temps whilst gaming for the first time a few days ago (computer is about 4 years old). Maybe it's been running like this the whole time.... :pfff:

Thanks for your time guys, I appreciate it.

Giving it to your dad well I think It should be fine, but god 96c!!!? I would still have bought an aftermarket heat sink but once again its not necessary. And about the gpu, it should be the fix because A, integrated graphics suck and aren't made to handle games, speaking from having an i3 with integrated graphics. B, integrated graphics are not made to play games by any standards, GTX650Ti!? is an awesome upgrade and something I wish I had if I got the money. Overall you good to go hope you found this helpful.
Well first off you have an intel haha just kidding, that should fix the problem with the things your ordering. Usually stock heat sinks suck and only work for some time with intel processors. If your new stuff doesn't help I suggest turning down the voltage on your CPU which is gona hurt its performance. Just wait till your stuff comes in and see if it helps, which it should.

That's all I really have besides the fact if your case heat management just sucks but I suggest a graphics card to take to load off your CPU and motherboard.

Thanks for the reply.

I haven't actually ordered the CoolerMaster Hyper212 EVO. I was asking if I SHOULD buy it 😛

I will be giving this computer to my father as an upgrade (he has an i3) sometime soon. He won't be playing games or running any resource intensive programs. Will I still need to buy the new cooler, or not worry about it?

Needless to say, my new i7 4700 will have a aftermarket GPU - Nvidia GTX650Ti 2GB Boosted, so hopefully I won't be getting the same problem!
