Recently my CPU has started running hot. Around 40-50 idle and jumping to 70s during games and even higher. I'm getting worried because I am trying to get a VR headset and a new GPU but not sure if something is wrong. I am going to try and change the thermal paste and make sure my cooler is secured tight. The computer itself is nearly a year old custom-made by me. The CPU is an I7-10700k with a corsair 240mm liquid cooler. I also read that a BIOS reset or something helps. How would I do that can someone walk me through that?

how can I check if the pump is still running
Your pump is working as temps would go sky high and doubtful fins are blocked after such usage. Would have to be a very dusty environment.

You temps are within spec if below 80C and under load. The I7-10700k has a thermal limit of 100C and would throttle down before that.
You can conduct a stress test for thermals under heavy load using AIDA64 which is free and will also test your CPU,FPU and Cache. There are also tests for GPU, RAM and disk.

Replacing your thermal paste should be done on a bi-yearly basis however a good TIM will have a better than 8 W/mk thermal conductivity rating and thinly spread to fill the tiniest of voids.

Regarding your Bios.
You can modify your Fan Curve...

Those temps are not too high.

If CPU temps suddenly jump hotter with an AIO first thing I'd check is that the pump is still running and not 'sucking air', or not drawing liquid from the radiator.

Second thing is that the radiator fins are not clogged with dust.

You can modify your Fan Curve profile in Bios (If your Bios is capable) to spin your fans to come on sooner and faster, which helps thermals when under load.

Best way is with a system monitoring utility and knowing which header the pump lead is attached to. Look at RPM on that header. Check the manual that came with your AIO for exact RPM but, it should be steady and constantly high possibly in the 2000-3000 RPM range. It's important to be a constant max speed, not varying as you would a fan. So set it up for maximum output (100% or +12V constantly) in BIOS.

The pump would be making noises if water is low and it's sucking air...a ticking or gurgling noise mainly. It might make that noise in any case on startup, but that's normal.

Radiators can become clogged fairly quick if your system is set on the floor, especially if you have a cat or dog that sheds hair. It's amazing what those things can hoover up in just a few weeks.
