since i see this tread i will add my 2 cents i ran sisoft sandra and i am overclocked to 4.2 ram overclcoked also and on hw monitor i noticed it maxed out for 75c on the core lows of 29c at idle im low but as soon as im stressing it skyrockets fast i may go back stock i have a 620 h20 with ic diamond tim

thats how i do it, works every time

Hi!, I am a little confused with all I've read in this post.. I also own a i5-4670K and i thought everything under 90 ºC was fine.

First of all i must say I am not overclocking expert and i won't have my PC running games or apps that hit the 100% CPU usage all the time. I just wanted to overclock a little my CPU and enjoy a little better speeds in general and when I game from time to time.

Before my desktop PC i owned 3 different laptops, I used them around 3 or 4 years each until i decided to upgrade to a better one. All of them Intel. The last one a hp with Core i7-720QM. In all these laptops, like many laptops, even in idle cpu temps are about 70 ºC, when i used them to play games they use to go to more than 80-88 ºC and if i played emulators like dolphin for the Wii or PCSX2 for PS2 then they usually went up to 90 - 95 ºC. Then with heatsink cleanning and a cooler the thing improved a little bit. Anyway, what i am trying to say is that this high temps seems almost unavoidable for laptops, and at least my three laptops didn't die yet in 4 years and who wants a CPU for more than 4 years??.

So, are desktop CPU less durable, more weak? or is the overclocking community exagerating a little??.. maybe over 75 ºC is dangerous only if you are planning to be gaming 12 hours per day?.
I am not saying I don't believe what you guys say, just trying to understand.. i am a little dissapointed cause I thought i might do at least a little overclocking with my PC but even at 4.0 Ghz is reaching easily the 85 ºC with prime95 small fft... the thing is that when i play some emu games or whatever is not going so high at all, maybe 60 - 70ºC... Another thing i notice is that always core 1 run way hotter than the others under prime95 and core 4 colder. For example, in stock, without any OC and prime95 small FFT: core1: 76, core2: 70, core3:69, core4:67, almost 10 ºC of difference!

So what should I do??

By the way my specs are:

Tower ----- Zalman Z11 Plus
Power ----- Tacens Radix VI 750W
MoBo ------ Asrock Z87 Extreme4
CPU -------- Intel Core i5-4670K
Cooler ----- Noctua NH-D14
RAM ------- G. Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 2133 PC3-17000 2x4GB CL11
Graphics - Radeon HD 5750 1GB DDR5

I used a predefined profile from the MoBo UEFI to OC it from 3.4 to 4.0 Ghz. Probably this is not the best way.. but i don't know much about OC and i didn't want to spend hours researching as i am a quite busy these days 🙁. Also I read some people were fine with this profiles, even the 4.4 GHz profile.

I know its not a big PC config for overclocking but i bought noctua NH-D14 and the Z87 Extreme 4 thinking in at least a little of OC.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if I made mistakes as i am not english speaker...

Wow, that was a whole bunch of drama....I have a 4670k on an MSI Z87-GD65 board and its being cooled by a Hyper 212 Evo, your temps are fine....You might want to think about moving your tower into a more ventilated area, but other than that, you're fine....

That is a lot of drama. Sounds like my temps are fine, too, then. I have the same chip on a UD5H inside an ATSC840 (why buy a new case every time you build a new computer?), OCed to 4.0. I'm using the 212 evo, too.

I ran OCCP for 20 minutes, and one core maxed at 85...but another one maxed at 77 (both in the first minute of the test). I think the average temp across all the cores was right around 80. I guess I'll go ahead and set it back on 3.4 and run it again for comparison. I am a little peeved that my idle temps are as high as they are...I'd take cooler off and redo my TIM, but I'm not sure how much difference it'd make. 35-36C is only 3-4 degrees higher than the case temp, and this case moves some air! It's 25 in the room, but the computer is in a corner with a desk (solid side) on one side, so airflow outside the case is almost certainly an issue. That'll change when I move in 3 months.

What type of TIM are you using? From my personal experiences, I recommend Shin-Etsu or Antec Formula 7.

If you feel like your temps are getting too high, you can always try lowering your voltages and see what the lowest stable setting is. Also, whenever running stress-testing software, make sure that your voltage is not set to "adaptive", as the CPU will be getting too much power and will heat up as a result.

That's not a terrible thought. Whenever I start playing a game that pushes my chip, I'll try undervolting (plenty of room to do that at 4Ghz!). Right now, I'm only playing one game, and it doesn't push my core temps above 60, even though it pushes my GPU temps to 67 (also not terrible).

As far as your GPU is concerned, you can get MSI Afterburner and set a custom fan curve. That way, you control when the fans ramp up.

My rig....

4670k
Asus Z87 K
Corsair TX750W
XSPC custom loop
GTX 760 oc'd to +90/+350mhz @ 106% power

Im running 4.55Ghz on my cpu at 85 degrees under testing loads. Voltage set at 1.375. Stable, no problems. I dont think your temps are a problem at all. And i dont plan on keeping this CPU past 1 to 2 years either.

Intel cpu's are 50% faster with single threads...so i would go with Intel because even though it's 2014 Most games even AAA ones are still single threaded.

As a game developer...I can personally tell you that you are wrong.

Hey I see no specifics on why 8350 thinks IB is better at all, so probably just opinion or that is what he has. I don't have exact answer to your question as I was looking up same thing for my 4700mq, but I do know that Haswell is known to operate at higher temperatures. I'm sure the engineers at Intel have their reason. Awesome processor, btw.

The newer processors are designed to operate hotter. Completely safe, maybe not 10 years ago not now fine. Might need to update your personal temp ranges.

I only just found this post...
I don't understand why your temps are so high under load.
I just replaced my GPU with a Titan 6GB, along with the same CPU and fan as you.
When I am playing FSX, with graphics set at maximum with addon scenery and aircraft, my average temp
is 44C.
