CPU temps bouncing from 35-50 degrees at random times.

Hey guys,

So I just built my first PC. I installed a Corsair H100i v2 liquid cooler on my Core i5 6600k. It installed fine, but my idle temperatures bounce from 35-50 degrees, not only when idle but when gaming also. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Solution
Yeah I wouldn't be concerned about mild fluctuation below 60°C. That could easily happen in certain games where intensity on CPU varies more. Just check on it every once in a while to make sure it's still at the temps you want.
35-50°C is certainly healthy, but fluctuation isn't optimal.

A few things to try:

Fully shut down, unplug, replug, and boot your computer and start Task Manager and see if you can find any processes starting/stopping sporadically that would cause CPU temps to fluctuate. Continue to do so as you open more of your day-to-day programs.

Another potential source is improper fan/pump speeds. And idle CPU can get that hot if the pump slows, something that you may not notice happening without purposefully checking. Check that your wiring is correct with the motherboard headers (especially the PUMP header) and perhaps monitor them through BIOS or Corsair Link.

I have Corsair Link and checked the fan profile that I have and it is still following it.

What i did was reboot my PC and now my idle temps are back to normal at 35-40c, but it fluctuates again while gaming,

Anything else that could be interfering?

I have the H100i v2 as well, and I can say that it fluctuates on idle, too. I wouldn't worry about temperatures unless they get more than 70°C (mine is 60°C under max load), but I usually idle at 30°C (or lower, different CPUs so I can't say much)

It happens rarely, I just got scared cause its my first build, so :/

Thanks for the information!

No worries, it's good to be aware of it. Start another thread (and link this one) if it really starts acting up down the road.
