Cpu temps rapidly changing every second

My cpu is changing in the range of 30-55c at idle randomly every second literally. Is this normal? It's a new build I've tried reseating several times, could it be a faulty sensor or chip? When I do the small test on prime it gets to about 80c I stop it when it gets to that point because I get worried.

Is the z97 of mate 1150 board known for this? Or should I exchange the chip and mobo and see if it gets better

Using a 212 evo cooler

Sounds like the heatsink isn't on properly. Did you use the backplate you are supposed with the Evo? Did you tighten in a criss-cross pattern as supposed to? Or too much thermal paste. The heatsink or thermal paste is enough to not have the chip overheat on idle, but any heat and it can't handle. Don't think anything is wrong, just a bad heatsink thermal paste install. Sometimes 1 more quarter screw turn can make the difference.

Backplate is on I took it off to check it looked perfect amount of paste it's arctic silver 5 I cleaned it off and tried again same thing tried again same thing ( coffee filter and alcohol ) I honestly don't think a cpu temp should be changing +~ 15 c every second I'm not exaggerating when I say every second when nothing is running in processes except windows files.

There could be quite a bit of things going on here. Sensors could be bad, or it could just be a normal occurrence. I use a FX8350 and these babies COOK. I'm using the 212 EVO and it dropped my temps from 60c+ idle, to about 52c+ MAX. So I doubt it's your cooler, or the paste unless it isn't spreading correctly (which it seems it is). What program are you using to check idle temp? Have you tried checking the temp through BIOS? If it's the same on a different program and in BIOS, I would say its just a bad sensor and you should see if they will replace your board for you.

I've tried the bios it jumps there too I've tried intels over lock software I've tried a few others also as well as the one that came with msi software. They are all over the place. On one of the temp readers ( I forgot which one I tried so many ) it was reading 125 c on core 3 and -13 on core 4 all the others just jumped around from 30-50 at idle when I try to run prime 95 or something of the like the temps still go up and down +-15 degrees c that i can understand more but the idle I don't get...

The evo 212 never gets hot not even a little intact it feels cooler than room temp

I have a feeling it's the mobo or chip that's bad and is not reading the temps right. Anyone agree?

When it spikes up like that, is it (or the general area around it) physically hot?

The bottom of the 212 is doing a great job I notice no warmth I def wouldn't say it is hot in any way when at 100% load with prime 95 it seems to stay at 3.4 ghz when it's a 4 ghz card? Wtf is it throttling for some reason ? Defective chip? I notice it goes no higher than 70 c atleast on intels monitoring and some others I was running open hardware says I'm at 110 c I'll include a pic

Prime95 has not been optimized for newer Intel chips, -It produces abnormally high load/temps.

Use Aida64 for safe and accurate benchmarking and sensors for each core:

And those jumps are not that crazy or abnormal "idle" is a relative term...especially nowadays with native apps needing more resources.. - I would worry about your max temp under load and making sure that does not go much higher (if at all) than ~85C.

The program just doesn't really know how to read your cpu very well. You could try another program in the mean time or wait for them to release an update that supports that chip. And because it's not actually that hot, you just have bad sensors. It's not a big deal at all either. You have a very good cooler and it should be able to tackle 99% of what you throw at it. If you keep the board and cpu or return it, that's all on you, but it's not a big enough issue for me to return it if I were in your situation.
