[SOLVED] CPU temps spike to 255 Celsius when in game.

Hey guys,

So I recently bought a FX-8320 to upgrade from my FX-4300, installed it, booted up CS:GO and noticed my frames going from 200 down to around 30-40 for about 5 seconds or so. This continued to happen about every 3-5 minutes. Checked my temps after playing out the game, and as my temps would hit about 50-55, it would suddenly jolt up to 255. It's obviously not at 255, I wouldn't be typing this if it was.

How can I fix the issue with the temps shooting up?

When the temps hit 255, the clock speed drops to 1.3 ghz, so I think thats something to do with the mobo (I know a little about GPUs, not much about anything else) Bios version is up to date.

Hi,
I've found that some AMD CPUs have features that slow down the CPU performance to keep the system from overheating and preventing the system from thermal throttling. For example AMDs Cool 'n' Quiet feature seems to prioritize temperature over performance, you can find these settings in your BIOS. Regarding the massive temperature spices, I would say that that is an issue with your mobo, it may be a faulty temperature sensor or it could be an issue with the data being corrupted on the mobo.

Let's start with the motherboard. The VRMs, lack of heatsinks, and power phases on that board make it totally unsuitable for running a FX 8320 (or a FX 6300 either) Your old 4300 was barely OK, but even so, it's a very low-spec board for power delivery. You are very likely getting thermal throttling from your motherboard, and your VRMs may be failing too.

You have a stock cooler and are running CPU intensive games that hammer individual CPU cores. I would want a better CPU cooler to limit CPU thermal throttling.

your motherboard is throttling ur cpu performance because it THINKS the cpu is overheating. turn off cool and quite in bios that should fix the issue . if ur temp got that high ur cpu would be melting out of its socket lol XD

OR the motherboard IS overheating due to light-weight VRMs without heatsinks and sketchy power phases.

Yeah I figured that the mobo was not up to spec. Serves me right for going store bought. Gonna look into getting a new one asap. Might as well get a CPU cooler while i'm at it.

PSU is a Rosewill CAPSTONE-750 750 Watt

I've tried turning off cool n quiet, but the issue continues.

Assuming you want to overclock the FX 8320, and since you have no upgrade available, you WILL want to overclock it eventually, get one of these boards
