CPU Throttling - 80°C

Greetings everyone,

I am having very high idle CPU temps around 45-50°C weather in my room is around 20°C
when i play games my cpu temps go up to 70-80°C and the games are unplayable
very bad performance and a lot of FPS Drops

My CPU is Q9950 and Intel says its TCase max is 71.4°C also i did some research to other peoples temps and results are that the TJunction max temps are arround 71-75°C

I am not an expert with temps and all so i though you guys could take a look because i cant understand if my cpu is throttling why my clocks are not downclocked ? i was running Prime95 results as well with temps monitoring and no downclocks

Are u sure the CPU Fan/HEAT sink is properly connected.. Cleaning out the CPU/CPU cooler and re-applying a good thermal paste like GC-Extreme should do the trick.. Sometimes CPU fans also mal-function, they spin & everything but don't transfer heat so might need to be checked with a verified working cooler..

A Deepcool Gammaxx 400 awarded EDITORS CHOICE 2016 for a $28 should do the trick if u need a new cooler..

Its not more than a month that i replaced my old CPU with the Q9550 so the cpu and thermal paste application is very recent im going to open my case right now not sure what to look for tho

Another thing u can check is borrow a CPU from a friend of yours, and if the temps are high with the 2nd cpu also, then probably it is time to get a better cpu cooler..

Tcase temp is something different, you are looking at core temperatures which relate to tjmax which you can see in your video is 100C. Your CPU isn't throttling as while 80C is hot its not close enough to 100C.

Tcase temp is something different, you are looking at core temperatures which relate to tjmax which you can see in your video is 100C. Your CPU isn't throttling as while 80C is hot its not close enough to 100C.

I have couple other cpus im gonna try them but im like very confident my cooler is bad because its a stock one default intel a good question would be how i survived till today? i was using another stock which i brake its pins by accident so i used a newer stock which might be a little retarded so as about tjmax and temps

Realtemp says my tjmax is 100C so having 80C is safe as 20C away from throtling but could you please do a research about Q9550 because i found that q9550 tjmax is only 75ish i hope i am wrong

I can't find any info that says the tjmax is 75C. If Intel made the CPU like that then it would be throttling at 80C as that's a higher temp, but it isn't so it would suggest the 100C temp is correct.

Are you using the cooler from your old E6550 on the upgraded CPU?

Your previous processor was 65W, and the new one 95W. I'm not sure, but I would expect Intel to bundle a better cooler with the Q9550. If you're using the smaller one from your previous CPU that would explain the high temps.

The Tcase Temperature is the maximum temperature allowed at the processor Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) -- the boundary between the CPU/cpu-cooler.. so don't read too much into it, if u can also borrow a cpu cooler -- repair guys will usually have a lot of spare coolers lying around.. You can confirm for sure that the cooler is the problem, 'cos CPUs go bad too.. Otherwise you might end up with an unnecessary cpu cooler/expenditure..

I can't find any info that says the tjmax is 75C. If Intel made the CPU like that then it would be throttling at 80C as that's a higher temp, but it isn't so it would suggest the 100C temp is correct.

There are certainly different Intel stock coolers for different processors. I don't know to be honest whether they're the same, but the Q9550 was a premium (and power hungry) CPU when released so it would certainly make sense for it to come bundled with a beefier cooler.

I would usually agree with others about isolating the issue before spending money on a cooler, but given the 212 EVO is so cheap and may well simply solve the problem immediately, it seems to be a good solution to me. If you still have the performance issues with an EVO then you can be pretty sure it's a bad CPU. In that case you can still use the cooler with a replacement CPU. It'll keep things cooler and quieter, so is a good investment regardless.

Why don't you pick one up and see if your problems go away?

You should be fine, it's quite small compared to something like the premium Noctua coolers.

Are u sure the CPU Fan/HEAT sink is properly connected.. Cleaning out the CPU/CPU cooler and re-applying a good thermal paste like GC-Extreme should do the trick.. Sometimes CPU fans also mal-function, they spin & everything but don't transfer heat so might need to be checked with a verified working cooler..

A Deepcool Gammaxx 400 awarded EDITORS CHOICE 2016 for a $28 should do the trick if u need a new cooler..
