Hi,
i've installed a new HD (Excelstore 80 G, ATA 100) on a K7S5A (3.1) board
and now my cpu (Athlon 1800+) is to hot. (60 Grad Celsius) I had only 46
Grad with a WD HD 30 G, ATA 66. Is ist possible that the new HD is to large
and fast for the little board? Any other reason?

Hard drive has little to do with CPU temp. More likely you don't have
a decent heat sink/fan or they aren't mounted properly. Did you use
thermal paste or pad on the CPU?

Since it sounds like you had it working fine before you changed the drive,
it seems VERY unlikely to have a new drive raise the temperature.
Much more likely:
Making the changes something reduced the airflow in the case,
check temperature inside the case to see it is only 10C above room temp
check that any case fans are still running
check that air flow wasn't blocked by moving a cable
Making the changes unplugged the cpu fan
check to see it is still spinning
Making the changes bumped the heatsink or reduced the thermal contact
check to see that it is still carefully seated against cpu
if you removed it make sure to clean and re-apply thermal compound

I had this problem when I installed a 120GB Seagate drive; it bumped the
temperature on the CPU diode up by about 4C. I bought a drive bay cooler
and mounted the drive in it, and now I'm running even lower than before
the drive was installed.

You probably either bumped the CPU heat sink while installing the drive,
or perhaps accidentally pulled loose its fan power connection (or the
power connection for some other fan -- are they all running?). Less
likely, but possible, the cables from the new drive now obstruct some
critical air flow path.

I doubt the drive (or the heat it produces) would make that big a
difference on its own.

Hi Impmon,

I didn't change the heat sink. It cooled my cpu for a long time constantly
at 46 grad. I only changed the HD. From this moment the temperature climbed
to 60 grad. The HD works fine, the system works faster, but what happened to
the cpu? Of course did I use thermal paste. In the meantime I changed the
fan (a newer one; the original fan from AMD for Athlon 2800+) and now I have
56 grad.
But why?

Please do not discount or put off looking into the cable suggestions.

I once put a drive in a box that I did not intend to leave there... I was
just trying it out for a few days on a known good board and memory for
testing purposes. Long story short... the box was an older small one with
only one intake at the bottom front and one in the power supply up top,
which worked good enough in an orderly box, but... once the flat ribbons
were blocking flow as well as the no-longer-tied back wire harness (with
about 947 adapters plugged in to take advantage of it's only two conncetors)
the temperature soared and crashed me in very little time. If you are in an
already warm room you might easily do severe damage if you have only one
blocked inlet fan.


Besides... any time you spend neatening these cables now will only keep you
even cooler when you get to the bottom of things if this is not your
situation.
