CPU upgrade, 2 cores or more

I have a celeron 420 motherboard for my mothers computer im building, but the celeron is too old, slow, and only has one core. I am looking for an upgrade processor,

Motherboard: Acer AcerPower S290 motherboard
RAM: 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-5300U

celeron 420 1.6GHz LGA 775 800MHZ fsb 65nm

will it be 100% compatible? because the pentium dual core e5300 i tried wasnt.

socket 775 cpus. It would probably would be better just getting a new cpu and motherboard/memory.
