CPU upgrade advice please

Hey guys,

I was looking at a CPU upgrade for my Dell studio xps 8300 , motherboard 0Y2MRG.

I currently have a i5 2400s @2.50ghz. I was looking at getting a cheap I5-2500 3.3GHZ to replace it. I dont have extra money to replace motherboards ect. I was simply looking at a cpu upgrade. The i7 cpus are pricey and this i5 would be in my budget.

Would there be much performance difference between them? And would I need to reinstall windows. If so will I need a brand new windows cd key?

If you only replace your CPU, you will not have to reinstall Windows. However, the performance difference between the two models you listed is negligible, and I would not recommend that you do this swap.

The difference depends on what programs you are using. High cpu demanding programs will be faster, for example video editing or some games. The difference between 3.3 ghz and 3.7 ghz won't be that much on most programs.

You won't need to reinstall windows, should upgrade without any trouble.

Thanks for replies guys. I 'think' there is a i7 cpu for my motherboard called i7-2600 but there is also a i7-2600K(is this compatible also?). I cant find a list of compatable cpu with my motherboard 0Y2MRG. Can anyone check for me please, many thanks

the difference in a a k cpu is that its unlocked so as you can overclock it

You wont be overclocking with that board (H67), just get a non-K.

Thanks for replies. The only reason I ask if the 'K' model will work is because according to ebay there is a lot more of them. I could be easier to get than the standard i7-2600 one. Thanks
