Hi I was looking for a processor upgrade to start saving for. I looked up CPU upgrades for my dell precision m4600 laptop and stumbled upon the i7-2820QM on dell's website. http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN99401/EN I have never done upgrades to any computer so I hardly know anything about it. Do I need some sort of cooling? If so where do I get that? Does this processor actually work with my laptop? I also saw another processor on that same page called the i7-2620M. This card would be cheaper but would it be just as good? Will either of these processors overclock to 3.4ghz as they say? If so can my laptop even handle overclocking? Any help or information would be great! Here are my specs:

Intel dual core i5-2520M 2.5Ghz processor

AMD FirePro m5950 1gb dedicated video memory

16gb ram

Solution
The Precision M4600 apparently supports 45 watt Sandy Bridge quad-core CPUs as it was offered with CPUs up to the i7-2920XM. Therefore the i7-2820QM will work as a simple drop-in replacement for your i5-2520M. The i7-2620M is very similar to your dual-core i5-2520M. It just has an extra 1 MB of L3 cache and a couple hundred extra MHz clock speed, while the i7-2xxxQM units have four cores unlike the i5-2520M and i7-2620QM.

The only units that you can overclock are the Extreme Edition units like the i7-2920XM. I would not overclock a laptop CPU as cooling is borderline at best, particularly with a high-TDP unit like the 45 W i7-2920XM. Laptop cooling mechanisms are part of the laptop and not upgradeable, unlike a desktop.

Alright so if the i7-2820QM is not too much of a difference and the price of the i7-2920XM is quite a bit more expensive I think It would probably be smarter to save for a new pc instead. These were some questions that I was really looking for answers to. Thank you for your help!

The i7-2620M is not going to be much faster than your current unit. The i7-2820QM is a quad-core unit and will be considerably faster in multithreaded tasks. Personally I would upgrade to the i7-2820QM as you can get them for around $150 on eBay and it very likely would make your laptop faster for much less than the cost of a new laptop.
