cpu upgrade help

Here’s my configuration

CPU: Core i5 6500
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-H170N WiFi
GPU: Asus GTX 1070
MONITOR: 1080p 144Hz

I noticed that with some game, 6500 bottlenecks the 1070. I am now contemplating for a CPU upgrade.

My options are:

• 
  Get a i7 7700 and be done with it
  Switch to Ryzen 1600x
  Wait for Q1 2018 for Coffee lake

you could upgrade to a 7700k if you like, make sure you upgrade the Bios to at least F20. (ref: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-H170N-WIFI-rev-10#support-cpu)

I'd choose the 7700 with some really beefy cooler such as the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3, Cryorig R1 or the Noctua NH-D14. The 7700 is known to run a bit on the hot side.

in fact I'm already using F20

I played the game, for example GTA V I barely get 60 fps as compared to YT reviews of the GTX 1070 using a better CPU than i5 6500 they're getting more than 70-90 fps on the same settings (Very High)

That's kinda strange as the 7700 is only a 65W part.

Most likely vsync is capping your framerate.

Also - how much ram does your system have?

That's kinda strange as the 7700 is only a 65W part.

My bad. I was thinking about the 7700K. Still I'd at least want a Cryorig H7 on there.

Wait until 2018 Q1 and get budget motherboards for i5 8400 or even ice lake will be released which would be a great performance jump.Also Geforce Volta will be released.
