So, im looking to upgrade my 4.7ghz fx 8320. Its starting to show its age especially in games like pubg that do not run too well and it bottlenecks my 1070 at 1080p.

Im thinking of either the 8600k or 1600. Im going to overclock my new cpu for sure.

My main problem is that im wondering if zen2 or zen 3 will have better gaming performance than the 8600k. I mainly game so im looking for the best gaming performance.

I rather save some money going with the 1600 now, and upgrade to a new cpu that has better gaming performance than the 8600k. My question is do you think that ryzen 2 or 3 will have better single core performance than the 8600k@5ghz?

It would be nice to upgrade to a faster cpu while keeping the same am4 mobo. But the 8600k might be better than all am4 cpus at gaming.

What do you think?

I highly doubt that Zen 2 will be better at gaming than Intel, should get really close but not trump Intel. But you can never know 100% until it releases.

The 8600k is your best option for pure gaming.
The best gaming performance is from the coffeelake CPUs. The best overclocking is from the Intel 'k' chips (in comparison to the AMD ones). You can't buy the future, you can only buy what is available today. No recent AMD chip has been better at gaming. This seems likely to continue. The Ryzen and threadripper are the most exciting thing from AMD since their first 64bit processor close to 20 years ago. They're great. But you are asking about gaming and for that you're better off with Intel.

My question is should I spend extra money now for the 8600k or get a ryzen 5 1600 and save some money? The problem is I rather spend the extra money on the 8600k if I know there will be no am4 cpu that offers better gaming performance.

No one can predict the future. Someday there will be an AMD cpu which beats the 8600k. Will it be an am4? Who knows. Will there still be a z370 compatible upgrade? Who knows.

hmm ok. I agree with both of you. I don't think any am4 cpu will be significantly faster (if at all) than the 8600k at gaming. So 8600k seems like the right idea even though I don't want to support intel and their 6 month motherboard obsolescence among other unfair business practices.

Anyways, I was thinking of the 8600k with MSI tomahawk z370, 16gb 3000 ram.

A good combination. Should be very fast. Get a CPU cooler. I recommend the Noctua - NH-D15S if your case is wide enough.

Since you listed Zen2 and Zen3 a few things to note here. Zen 2 and 3 should be about 10-15% clock for clock faster than the original Zen. Zen is almost as fast as Intel clock for clock sometimes faster sometimes slower.

Although memory seems to be a large part of this equation for instance there are people that have shown if you take the time to OC quality B-die memory in a Ryzen system and heavily adjust the timings Ryzen can beat or match the 7700K at 5Ghz in games at 3.9Ghz. Kinda scary. -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6yp7Pi39Z8

Just something to keep in mind. If AMD continues to improve Zen's memory compatibility and timings or if Zen 2 has a much improved memory controller it could be a force to behold based on what has been shown.

The possible performance of zen 2 makes this decision that much harder lol. I think im just going to have to pull the trigger on the 8600k. The difference between a 1600 vs 8600k is only about $100 right now.
