Hi,
I am wondering if it is worthwhile upgrading my CPU.
Current build:
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H
CPU: i53570k overclocked to 4.2GHZ
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU
Graphics card: MSI GTX 1080 (recently purchased update as I got a good deal)
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 8GB (4gb *2) DDR3
Power: Cooler Master RS650 (650W)
Case: BitFenix Merc Beta Midi Tower
Screen: BenQ G2420HD 24 inch 1920x1080

I have been sitting on the same set up for a while but recently upgraded the GPU. CPU has been doing OK but framerate is struggling with CPU intensive games such as total war.

I was looking at the I5 8400, as it is relatively affordable. However, understand that if I do upgrade the CPU, I will need a new Mobo and probably RAM and case? Any idea how much this would cost total? I am based in Singapore.

Do you think it is worthwhile and any advice?

Cheers!

Have you analysed your performance to verify that you are running out of CPU.

I would suspect that you might get performance benefit with more RAM.

You will not notice much improvement in performance improvement between the two, you will get some but not sure if it is worth the money.
Given that you will need new motherbaord and RAM anyway.

Look at i7-8700K or R 2700X

Thanks for your help!
I haven't analysed performance, is this easy to do?
Understand it probably isn't worth the CPU + Mobo upgrade. Would it be worth upgrading the RAM alone? I suppose I should be looking at 2*8gb DDR4 but could I use DDR4 with my current set up?

You Can't use DDR4 RAM with your current motherboard (and chipset). You have to stick with DDR3.
I would look at 2x4GB to bring you up to 16GB.

I don't think that you will benefit from more.

Rather than spend money on upgrade of old platform, you should consider new Motherboard, CPU and RAM.

To look at your system performance you can just a look at task manager, are you maxing out CPU, RAM or HDD?
Better still set up perfmon.
