Hey,

I've got an HP Pavilion DV7-3160es with an intel i5-430M processor, in its S1G3 socket ofcourse.
Is it possible to upgrade to a better CPU if available or do I already have the best one?

Regards,

Isn't the S1G3 socket for an AMD processor? The 430M uses a G1 socket (aka PGA988) as far as I know.

The safest upgrade would be to a i5-560M or i5-580M. If you wanted to take a chance on a different micro-architecture ... you could try a Westmere i7-620 or i7-640.

Or are there more powerful processors that MIGHT work? like the i7-840QM(PGA988 socket)? It is compatible with the DV7-4050 btw.

I see a few problems with the i7-840QM. 3 of the more important ones are (1) it is 45 w whereas you system is designed for 35 w ... could your system handle the extra heat?; (2) a different microarchitecture ( Nehalem ) and (3) it has no integrated graphics. The lack of a graphic processor would be hard to overcome.
