CPU upgrade question

Hello,

Currently I'm running a 333mhz AMD K6-2 computer. I'm pretty "dumb" when it comes to computers and I was wondering if I would be able to just get a 500mhz AMD K6-2 CPU and install it in place of the 333mhz CPU.

Also, is there a way to tell what kind of motherboard you have without opening up your cpu case and looking?

Thanks,
333mhz

Well, first you'll need to know if your motherboard supports such an upgrade.

To find the make and model of your board, press on Break on the bootup screen when the system is counting the memory. Write down all the info appearing on that screen and press Break again to resume bootup. With this info, I would be able to tell you if your Motherboard supports your planned upgrade.

Hmmm,

It's an IBM computer and gets just a splash screen saying IBM. Is there a way to find out from the bios settings?

Well, in my AWARD Bios, I get to see the the model number of my board but not the revision number nor the BIOS version. Maybe someone else has another opinion on that.

Otherwise, you'll have to open the case and look for the make and model on the board itself. It's usually engraved near the edge of the board in very small prints.

When bootinh try presing esc. or tab one of those might let you see the boot screen. There also might be a setting in the bios. to disable the splash screen.

Hello,
I've been reading a few message boards I got from the IBM forums about my computer. Some people have been saying you can upgrade this model to 550 mhz.

The person who has the 500mhz CPU said he'll send it to me for free. So I'll let him send it.

I have another question, does anyone know where I can find information on upgrading a CPU? I'm fairly new to this. I've installed RAM and my new video card but haven't heard anything about CPU installation or taking out old CPU's.

Or you can try calling tech support and see if they can provide you with any information. Ask them what type of motherboard is in the system (you'll be lucky if they know 😉

Hello,

I have found a diagram of my Motherboard online. It's at
http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DETR-3WDHB9.html

does anyone know what the settings for a 500mhz cpu would be? I know now for a fact that people with the same computer have 500mhz cpu's. But I'm a complete newbie and don't know anything about installing them.

I looked at the link you posted.
The list shows that you can set your CPU multiplier to 5X and bus frequency to 100/66/33, that's what you need for 500. Set the core voltage to 2.2v. The diagram gives you all the settings you need, so you can use the processor the way intended.

Thank you =)

I talked to a friend and he said

==================================================
Uninstall:
1) Turn it off, and pull all the power!
2) open the case
3) Ground yourself, and stay grounded the whole time.
4) Unsecure the fan via the attahment clips
5) Find the processor, lift the lever, pull it off
6) Put the 300MHz Proc in a static free bag
7) that's it.
=================================================

In between necessities:

1) Change the FSB to 100

According to the link you supplied to the motherboard picture/info:

Change SW1 to On, Off, Off On, Off, Off

2) Change the clock multiplier to 5.0

According to the link you supplied to the motherboard picture/info:

Change SW2 to Off, On, On

3) Change the CPU core voltage to the appropriate amount. I dont know what the core voltage for that CPU is, you need to find that out before installing.

4) I'm not sure about this one... I would try to leave it as is, then if it didn't boot, I would change the jumper to 2-3.
JPX1
1-2 ---- AMD K6S-300
2-3 *# CPU Type --- Other CPUs

5) Also, what is this set to right now?
SW3(B3, B4)

============================================
Install:
1) Hopefully you still have it unplugged, the power pulled, the case open, and you are grounded.
2) With the lever upright, Place the 500MHz proc in the socket, making sure the pins all line up.
3) Hold you hand on the proc, to make sure it stays seated, and press the lever down.
4) Attach the heatsink onto the 500 MHz proc. Preferably with a thin layer of thermal paste between. My roommate is running his 550MHz K6-2 without thermal paste, and is not having problems. So you can leave that out, it's just better to have it.
5) replace the case cover, plug the power back up.
6) PRAY
7) Hit the power switch.

does that all sound okay?
