when playing overwatch my cpu usage goes to 100%. at the main menu it barely reaches 25%, on windows with nothing open its at less than 10%. however when i go into a game its at 60%+ and when theres a team fight it goes to 100% usage!! ive tried different settings, the higher i go i seem to suffer less but its still there, i keep v sync and display based fps on, set priority to high but nothing seems to work. its really annoying and making me lose my love for a game i enjoy so so much. any help would be greatly appreciated and im willing to try suggestions.

once again, although a 460 is a little weak, its not out of the question for some overwatch at 1080p. a CPU and MOBO upgrade would smooth out your gameplay in those big fights for sure though. Remember, you can always turn down some graphics settings, but you can't turn down the gameplay itself. The CPU handles the decisions and gameplay calculations. SO for someone trying to save some money here and there, i would hold onto that 460 and just get even a modern i3 setup. next month i3's will be equal to previous gen i5's so you might score a really nice basic intel setup. if you wait for the 8th gen desktop release. I have a friend who...
Although that CPU is quite weak by today's standards, high CPU usage doesn't really mean anything. if you stop checking the usage and just play the game, if it runs to your liking than its fine. Now if your questions is " when i get into team fights the game stutters" then you should consider the upgrade.

Also note that if turning the settings higher lowers CPU usage, than at lower settings you arent using your graphics card to your full potential at the lower settings. "usage" as measured by the computer itself is extremely far removed from how well you are handling running a game. for instance i could use a brand new 16-core i9 and get 20% usage but get lower frame rates than a 7700K getting 75% usage given that both are run alongside a non bottlenecking GPU (such as SLI titan Xp). That becuse inherently, games will not use the extra cores, which meanas cores will be idle, which means the computer will read low usage even though the 16-core i9 would be limiting your frame rate due to the fact that the 4 cores or so that the game actually uses will be running slower than on the 7700k.

the CPU is new, less than a month old. my last one broke, so i replaced it and got one of the best cpu's for my MOBO. the problem never happened when i first got the game and it ran smooth? i am 16 so money is tight and cannot afford a new system atm hence why i bought a new CPU not a new mobo and better CPU. is there anything i can do to help me out and maybe not receive these high usages.

Maybe you just bought your CPU, but it is still a very old CPU model on an old platform and as TheFluffyDoig said, weak by todays standard. There isn't a whole lot you can do to upgrade your current system. It's time to start looking for building a new system.

and for those of you who will come in to talk against my post, it is very true that this person's CPU is weak, and very true that he could upgrade it, but i am merely saying that if the computer runs fine when hes not checking, then he shouldn't worry.

whats the actual experience like when playing? nvm jsut read from above lol

thank you fluffy dog, you've been really helpful. how much would that upgrade cost, sorry im quite new to cpu's and motherboard and dont even know when to start looking. how much of a better upgrade would it be and would it be worth the money? the pc repair shop that advised me get a new CPU said they could do a upgrade and it would be a new mobo and a new fx 8320 but it would cost 325 for them to buy it and install it as i dont know how to install a mobo. Christmas is coming up so i could look to upgrade then but was thinking of getting a laptop as im studying a levels atm so a laptop would be handy!

Doing ordinary things within Windows does bring up/spike CPU usage, and, playing games will bring it up to very high during the game, so, nothing really of interest there....

I fear the old X4's days are dwindling fast, especially with newer titles...

Time for the R5-1600, ASAP...

If gaming is something you do to pass time and for fun, then a laptop would serve you well. you can get 4core i5's and GTX1050 graphics for around 700-800 dollars. that would serve school and gaming fairly well. I was building a PC for my GF and she settled on a laptop cause her school laptop was dying anyway, so we just put all the money into one computer. Definitely a smarter way to spend money if you don't build the PC's yourself.

IF you really like having a separate gaming station at a desk and if you are going to build yourself, then a ryzen build is going to be the best for you. getting a Ryzen 5 and mobo for it could cost ~250-350 for CPU MOBO, but you will need DDR4 ram which would add another 60-110$ (8GB-16GB). SO essentially the minimum upgrade would cost ~310$, and the best upgrade for a Ryzen 5 could cost 460$.

okay thanks for the answer, would you be able to link me some as i have no idea even where tyo start looking, also how would i go about installing? i wouldnt want a gaming laptop as i prefer gaming at a desk and have good peripherals 😀

Yeah, the 460 will be fine. I agree with R5-1600 purchase though. you can always turn graphics down in the games that need it. I understand not having alot of money for these things. Theres is always a region in spending where you get eh best value, but in computers that rends to be right around 1000$ for the entire PC to get the best value out of each part. WHat they are referring to is that technically a 460 is a pretty bad card for what you pay, but anything in that price range is a bad value. The best values are in the XX60-XX70's from nvidia and the 480-580 and Vega 56 from AMD, but currently the prices of GPU's is artificially inflated due to market demand, so really its the worst time to upgrade a GPU.

So before we get into buildig yourself, can you tell me what case, Power supply, and CPU cooler you have currently? Was this system a prebuilt? did someone nuild it for you?

^this will help me see what can fit, and also if the power supply is worth trying to build on.

I have a 650 watt power supply
My case is the 'cooler master elite 310 mid tower case
The cpu cooler is the stock cooler for the Athlon x4 880k
Yes it was prebuilt but it was from cyber power so I'm pretty sure that they put the parts together themselves, they built it with 'upgradability in mind'
It came with the amd a10 7850k quad core intergrated graphics and the rx 460 was put in my me as I wanted a dedicated gc
I don't really know what my budget is completely as this would be for Christmas, probs not that much more than £400 and I don't know how to install a mono or ram ( I know how to install a gpu and cpu ) I really appreciate all the help your giving me
Also I was told that my ram is good enough and if I were to upgrade wouldn't need to change the ram?

The new platform is going to use DDR4, so you wont be able to use the DDR3 regardless of whether or not it impacts performance. Waiting until christmas will help you out i think, because intel will be changing the configuration of its i3 series processors next month. They should beat out the R5-1400 in games but i dont know what the prices will look like.

SO if you are gonna wait until christmas, its best to just turn some settings down and try to get the best experience with what you have, and then re-open a thread or message one of us when you are ready to go and have a more concrete budget. Things in the parts world could change between now and then so our advice could be widely different in december than it is now.
