Question CPU water cooling pump is extremely loud during Windows startup (100%)/boot after updating BIOS ?

Motherboard: ASRock X670E Pro RS

Hi guys, i need help pls :/ after updating to BIOS version 3.20, the water cooling pump on my cpu (AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D + Fractal Lumen S36 AOI) is activated extremely agressively/loud during Windows startup, for about 2-3 seconds. After that, everything runs normal... but think this could damage the pump permanently after some time... i need to fix this somehow. -any ideas?

Is it possible that the pump is receiving too much voltage and is therefore pulling so hard when starting?
The problem didn't occur with my previous BIOS version. Everything seems a bit strange.


The mainboard has no direct connector for the pump. I built the PC with a friend and he said the pump would have to be connected to cpu_fan2/WP Switch.
Here are the current settings in Bios:
CPU_FAN2/WP Switch = W_Pump
Water Pump Control Mode = DC Mode
Water Pump Setting = Customize
Water Pump Temp Source = Monitor CPU

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with the whole topic yet and need some help 🙁

And that is coming from pump?
It doesn't sound like a pump noise.

Could it be noise from some fan?

->It's definitely coming from the pump.
You're right, the first long, drawn-out noise sounds similar to a fan, followed by a short noise (that's how it was before, just the short/ brief suction noise when booting).
Unfortunately, the ASRock X670E Pro RS doesn't have a pump pin connector. It only has a CPU_FAN1 and a CPU_FAN2 connector. According to the manual, these two are compatible with pumps. I just swapped the connectors for testing, but it didn't change anything.

When you updated BIOS, this also resets BIOS settings.
Your pump/fan settings got reset to defaults.

Pump speed should not be regulated. It should run at constant speed.
Adjust fan speed settings for fan header, where pump is connected.
DC mode, constant speed. Choose speed based on noise levels.
For example, if 100% is too loud for your comfort, then set to constant lower speed like 70% or 50%.

I knew that the settings would be lost, so I wrote everything down beforehand and reset them after the update.

I set the pump to a constant speed as a test, and it's running. The setting worked, but unfortunately, it doesn't change the drawn-out noise during bootup. You always have to ask yourself what you changed that could have caused this noise... and in this case, the BIOS was updated, so theoretically, that's the only thing that could be causing it. ->Can I safely downgrade to an older BIOS to test whether the noise goes away? Or should I not do that?

This all is so strange and makes no sense—if only there were a logical explanation for it. Well, since the pump and cooling are working perfectly, maybe I should just accept it and stop thinking about it.

Pumps have same type of motor as fans, BIOS has no idea if it's fan or pump. It's treated and speed adjusted same way.
