Hi again. According to intel's Ark page my intel 945g board should take an e6700 core 2 duo chip. When I inserted an e6700, the pc wouldn't boot but on replacing the old chip, it fired up fine.
My pc is an hp compaq dc7600 small form factor, currently with a Pentium 4 HT chip, 3gb Ram and running windows 7 32bit Home premium.
That I think may be the problem because the machine was made for XP/Vista ready and I can't get a bios update from hp because it doesn't recognise this machine with windows 7.
I should hate to waste the new chip so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Ron.

Solution
Wait a minute, what is your BIOS version?
Is this your system?

I see Windows 7 doesn't appear under the drop-down menu when it comes to downloading compatible drivers, but Vista drivers should work fine in 7 and you should get better drivers after that by using Windows Update.
There appears to be a BIOS version available for your system which was released on August 28th 2014. Have you tried that one?
According to the documentation for your system, there are various ways you could update your BIOS in : (a) DOS-based by creating a bootable USB stick from which to start the update process, (b)straight from Windows, (c) from your BIOS

I want the full product number for your computer in order to check exactly what system components you have. As you can see, there are many Intel boards based on the 945 chipset:

I cant find anything on hp's support site later than 2009. There is a document dated 2014. Is that what you saw. cheers, Ron

Once you open the link to the HP website, you need to select "Microsoft Windows" under "Operating System", "Windows Vista" under "Version". After that, click the blue "Update" button.

Then a new page will load and you'll have downloads over there. There's a category called "BIOS" under which you should find "HP Compaq Business Desktop System BIOS with Microsoft Windows BitLocker Support (786D1)"
"2.04 Rev. A"

Try this link for the 32 bit edition of Windows:

Solution

does it make it to the POST (power on self test) or does nothing happen at all?

No. When I switch the power on, the light comes on and then dies. What are you thinking?

sometimes, if your CPU is broken it'll do the same thing, but im not sure

That thought crossed my mind too. I;ll have to take it to the shop to see if they can test it for me. Cheers, Ron
