So - Building a new PC - Wondering where and if I can save money with these components.

Example -

I've recently found out that no AMD cpu can compare with an i5 when it comes to gaming.
However, AMD cards usually offer better value for money.

So my question. is it possible to save money on an AMD cpu/motherboard, then use that money on a better video card than I could afford if I went if I went with intel, and therefore, have a system that could compete with an i5 set up -

I'm not overly tech savy, so if I haven't made sense, or you need more info, let me know.

Bare in mind, this is with Gaming in mind.

Would bottle necking occur with such a set up?

Thanks

Solution
Devil's Canyon is Intel's name for the CPU line that came out a Haswell refresh eg i5 4690 and 4690k and i7 4790k. They are the latest and the best.
I dunno where you found out gaming wise that a amd cpu can't compare to a intel i5 cpu. If anything its only ~5fps difference in the most demanding games (unless you emulate). for gaming its always better to get a decent cpu, good enough motherboard and the best gpu you can afford.

A better GPU will always grant a better performance, so you either could go with an AMD CPU, or get an i3 CPU, an i3 will deliver practically the same performance a FX-8350 would save a few games, with the advantage that you'll have a better upgrade path all the way to the i7 4790k whereas with AMD FX-8350 is practically the top.

Ah yes Budget sorry -

Thanks for all the info so far.

I was initially looking at a i5 4690 with a AsRock Performance Motherboard - I currently own a GTX 660 - This is the reason for the question - chosing that particular cpu and motherboard combo, doesn't really allow me to stretch my budget beyond the 660. So was wondering if I could be sneaky going with a more cost effective AMD - cpu/motherboard combo and be able to upgrade the GPU -

My budget is around 700 - 800 pounds

You could get eg -

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£162.18 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Killer ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£89.99 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory (£69.64 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Crucial MX100 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£51.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£53.94 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card (£187.15 @ Scan.co.uk)
Case: Corsair Graphite Series 230T Orange ATX Mid Tower Case (£57.50 @ Aria PC)
Power Supply: XFX 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (£47.99 @ Aria PC)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer (£13.15 @ Amazon UK)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit) (£72.35 @ Aria PC)
Total: £805.88

Windows 8? Pfft 😛

Thanks for this - I had done something similar and was simple wondering if I could save a pretty penny without sacrificing performance going with AMD CPU and Motherboard combo...

Anyone have any opinions on the fx-9370 against an i5 4690?

T_T - You've both fried my brain lol

What's this Devil's Canyon nonsense XD??

Pretty sure I'm just gonna go with an i5 4690 with AsRock H97 Fatality Killer and GTX 960 -

Unless there is something more cost effective while maintaining performance???
