Crash -> GPU Code 43 + Blue lines/artifacts across screen + New GPU?

Greetings,

I was playing For Honor on my PC and suddenly the screen completely turned a Tan/Beige Color and my sound got scrambled and then cut out. Keyboard and mouse still received power but nothing was on the screen and the keyboard didn't do anything.

I waited for about a minute and nothing happened, so i held the power putton for a hard shutdown. When i rebooted the computer, i opted for a normal start up. This however, was impossible. The computer froze while windows 7 was loading in. (Logo froze midway animation, waited a few minutes, nothing happened)

So i did a hard shutdown again. This time i opted for recovery, instead of normal. After the system recovery was done, i managed to succesfully get into windows. However, this is when the blue lines/dots/artifacts appeared on my screen. They only appear on darker and blue backgrounds, when i move my mouse over them they vanish for a few seconds, when i move my mouse away they return within 5 seconds.

On top of that, my GPU got the code 43 by windows.....Which is the biggest problem imo because the blue lines vanish if i connect the DVI cable to my integrated graphics. Funny thing is, however, that Windows devices detects my GTX 780 all the time yet it's always disabled by Code 43, yet my BIOS does not detect my GTX 780. Also, my GPU is receiving power as the power lamp on it is burning green and all the fans are working correctly. GPUZ detects everything on it as working, except there's no clock or memory speed on it.

Also, when I run my ASUS GPUMonitor, the program won't launch at all. Benchmark Programs crash immediatly as well. Before this all happened my GPU would run at 55 degrees celsius in heavy load and about 65 in the same situation during hot summer periods. Mobo and CPU temperatures are always lower than that though.

This thread is one of my last resorts. I am quite sure my GPU got fried but I want to make sure before i commit to buying an expensive new GPU when it's not the problem.

System Specs: (All newly bought in August 2014)

OS: Windows 7 64 bit
Mobo: Asus Maximus Ranger 7 Z97
Proc: i7 4790k @ 4.0 Ghz
Gpu: Asus Gtx 780 DC II 3GB
Mem: 2x8GB G. Skill Trident X @1.333mhz
Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
Storage: Samsung 2.5'' 840 Evo 250Gb + Seagate 3.5'' 2TB SSHD
PSU: Corsair RM 850W Gold

Here's so far what i've tried:

1. Check if cables are actually well connected on both sides and clean out the entire system of dust. (which was not that much)

2. Go to devices -> Uninstall GTX 780 -> Safe mode DDU -> Reseat GTX 780 in different PCI slots -> BIOS force set gpu as PCI -> remove internet cable -> Reboot windows, clean newest driver install/Older Drivers tested as well -> Windows states GTX 780 should work correctly after reboot -> Reboot -> activate internet again -> Code 43, yet both GPUZ and Geforce Experience can detect the driver as being installed, while in geforce Experience it will always state that a new driver is available. (If I select it again, it will tell me for instance that driver 399 of August 2018 was installed and that it succesfully updated it to driver 399 of August 2018. Geforce is high i guess)

3. Disabling other parts to see if it's a power issue. No effect.

4. Update Bios. No effect.

5. Windows update. No effect.

6. Clear CMOS

7. Shutdown PSU, remove power cable, hold power putton for 1 minute + let it rest for 24hrs before plugging in power cable again.

8. Disable fast boot in BIOS and switch from legacy to UEFI.

9. Disable integrated graphics card -> Safe mode DDU to clear Nvidia-> Clean Install of Nvidia and Drivers.

As i see it, i have a few options left:

1. Use GPU in another PC. I have no other system to test the GPU in, neither do friends or family because their PSU's are too small and most of their cases are so tiny that the GTX 780 can't even fit in... Also, most shops ask a 55-100 euro fee to examine it. (which is already like 30-40% of the costs of a new gtx 1060...)

2. Order a new GPU. If the same problem pops up on boot i can still return it under warranty of returns.

3. Throw my GPU in the oven. I still think it's a 1st of april thing, but at this point i have no clue.

Now my questions to the wizards are:

- What do you think what the problem is and what would fix it?

- IF I would need to buy a new GPU, what would you guys suggest, keeping in mind my system is 4 years old, I play on a 1080p monitor, don't play VR, But I am a sucker for preparing for the coming years and prefer to play on high(est) settings with at least 50-60 FPS?

-When should i get a new GPU? In the Netherlands most 1060, 1070 ti (Weirdly enough 1070 are the same price as 1070 ti so i will skip 1070) and 1080 (ti) cards are now just barely getting back to MSRP of 2 years ago. Some of these are a bit cheaper (1-3% less than original price)
Right now most 1060 6gb are around 320 euro, 1070 ti at around 450-500, 1080 530-600 and 1080 at around 700 euro. Do you think the prices on the 10 series will drop a lot after the 2080 release on the 20th of september? Is it worth it to wait for a 2070 over a 1070 ti/1080? I like graphics but imo RayTracing will not be a big deal for the next 4 years/It's not something i wish to pay hundreds of euros more for. (Our estimated pricing on 2080 will be around 850-900 euro aftermarket, so i guess the 2070 will be at least 700 euro on release over here, while 500-550 is my limit)

Praise be, you survived my wall of text!

Issue is most likely a bad video card. Only good way to check that is to try it in another computer.

I guess the only good news is that a newer card would be a good match for your system. At 1080 60hz, a 1070Ti would be plenty for the system even for newer games. If you can wait for the new cards, you can check how things are then for pricing of them and older cards.

I had this problem as well. I reinstalled windows and there for all new drivers for my 780. I also tried uinstalling it in the device manager and then searching for new devices to no avail. I took it out and just used my onboard graphics and the blue lines, crashes, random black/colored screens were gone. It seems like a new graphics card is needed but I was wondering what you ended up doing in your situation.

I have experienced similar things as yourself. I have a gtx780 and have tried everything to bring it back from the dead but after a long session with nvidia tech support it seems like the gpu itself is gone. I tried most of the things you have listed here so I'm fairly sure you may be in the same boat as I but always helps to give their tech support a call/chat.

Similar thing is happening to me with the same card: GTX 780. Maybe this particular card has issues? It was fine for a while, then will flicker, freeze, and will be code 43ed when I restart. Fully uninstalling and reinstalling the card will clear the code 43, and it'll work for a bit, but then it'll just do the same thing a few hours later.

UPDATE: I think I found something that might have fixed it? I'm using an Asus Z170 motherboard in a PC I built myself. I never actually ran the CD that came with the motherboard to install the chipset drivers. When I installed those, the code 43 instantly cleared, card came back online, and hasn't misbehaved yet (hopefully it'll stay that way.) So...if you haven't done so yet, try installing your chipset drivers!
