critical updates

I have SP1 installed in XP Home, but I have not been able to install SP2.
I'm not concerned about SP2 after reading all the problems some people seem
to be having with it. But I haven't been able to install any other critical
updates either. I don't know why this may be.

I run a spyware checker each morning immediately after booting. The only
thing it picks up (and I have to eliminate each day) is Twain-Tech adware.
I have not been successful in removing it permanently though I have tried
some of the suggested methods. I have HijackThis, AdAware, Spybot,
SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, as well as SpywareStormer - and that is not
even counting Norton AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm firewall. Someone ought to
come up with a way to keep this junk off our computers without all these
different security software devices.

Why can't I update?
