I will be using this namely for gaming
Some 3ds Max and adobe
Not too worried about storage space
might use ubuntu for OS
16 or 8GB ram?

seeing as you will be doing some rendering it's wise to go for 16GB of RAM. perhaps you can switch the r9 290 for a gtx 970, it's a bit more expensive but it's worth it.
also, not all games work on ubuntu, keep that in mind.

ok. I do have win7 too. Just thought of the option for ubuntu
i will take into consideration the gtx 970

you can probably find some faster RAM for the same price aswell. but yes it's good. faster RAM wont make muich of a differenc ein gaming, it will in rendering etc however.
